Kessler helped the then-Flying Dutchmen to the NCAA Tournament as a freshman in 1999 after scoring 13 goals and adding 10 assists in 14 games. Hofstra would defeat Navy in the first round of the NCAAs that season. In 2000, Kessler erupted for a team-high 48 goals, which at the time was the second-highest single-season total in program history, and added 13 assists in leading the team back to the NCAA Tournament.

As a junior in 2001, Kessler set a Hofstra record for goals in a season with 51 and tied for the team lead with 23 assists. The 51 goals and 74 points ranked second in the NCAA. In the first round of the NCAA Tournament against Virginia, Kessler would score one of the biggest goals in program history as he found the back of the net in overtime to give Hofstra a 15-14 victory.

Kessler would close out his outstanding career in 2002 with 28 goals and 21 assists as Hofstra went 10-3 overall and 5-1 in its first season in the CAA. He would also go on to play in the USILA North-South Senior All-Star Game.

In addition to his career rankings, Kessler's 51 goals in 2001 rank second on the Hofstra single season list and his 74 points that season tie him for fifth on the single season points list.

Following his graduation with a degree in marketing, Kessler played professionally in Major League Lacrosse and scored 12 goals and added five assists in 13 games played with the Baltimore Bayhawks, Bridgeport Barrage, Philadelphia Barrage, and Long Island Lizards.
