Introduction
The Strength and Conditioning (S&C) coach guides student-athletes through a regimen of physical training to optimize their athletic abilities and decrease injury potential inherent in participating in physical activity. With the primary tasks of designing sport-specific training programs and teaching proper exercise techniques while encouraging, motivating and holding student-athletes accountable, a S&C coach is able to help student-athletes perform to their utmost potential. They are the immediate head supervisor for organization and administration of proper safety instruction, supervision, maintenance / daily continuance of the S&C facility.
As S&C coaches, the majority of each day is spent educating the student-athlete in the areas of lifting technique, exercise selection, progression, motivation, teamwork, and performance nutrition. As a result, a strong emphasis is placed on remaining up to date on research and developments in the field of S&C. New views on enhancing athletic performance are presented daily and as professionals of the field, make it a priority to be aware of these ideas. It is our responsibility to understand the physiology and biomechanics behind any new methods to have the context to be able to recognize and disseminate the legitimacy of each idea and determine whether it may benefit a particular individual or team.
From the sharing of ideas and new material within our department as well as from other colleagues in the field in addition to continuing our education by attending regional and national conferences, we are able to remain current with the latest research and successful programming methodologies. Not only does our staff attend such conferences, they have lectured and presented both on the regional and national level. When all of the above factors are combined into one setting it provides the opportunity for our student-athletes to flourish.
