EDITH GALLAGHER
Edith Gallagher, a two-sport athlete in field hockey and softball, played at Hofstra from 1986 through 1990.
An honorable mention field hockey All-American in 1989, Edith also was named to the All-Mid-Atlantic Region team that season. She was also a two-time All-East Coast Conference selection in 1988 and 1989.
Gallagher ended her field hockey career as Hofstra’s all-time leader in goals (43), assists (18) and points (103). She currently ranks third all-time in points and goals, ands is tied for fifth in assists.
During her All-America season, Edith led the team with 19 goals, five assist and 42 points. The 19 goals and 42 points stood as single season records until 1998 when Janet Walsh tallied 20 goals and 44 points. Edith also held the single season assists record after tallying 10 in 1988, a record that would stand for eight years.
As a softball player, Edith was an All-Northeast Region and an All-ECC choice in 1989 after batting .410 with eight doubles, six triples, 30 runs scored and 19 RBIs. In her four-year career, she owned a .375 batting average with 26 doubles, 14 triples, six home runs, 103 runs, 62 RBIs and 22 stolen bases. Her 14 career triples rank second on the all-time list at Hofstra. Her .410 average in 1989 still stands as the third-best mark in program history.
After graduating from Hofstra with a degree in health and physical education, Edith served as an assistant coach in both softball and field hockey at Mansfield University and took over head coaching duties in both sports in 1992 before stepping down as field hockey coach in 1993.
In addition to her coaching responsibilities, Edith has also served on the selection committee for the NCAA Softball East Regional Tournament and was the regional chairperson for three years.
Edith also holds a master’s degree in sports management from the United States Sports Academy, where she graduated summa cum laude in 2004.
