CHRISTINE NEWINS (MOORE)
Christine Newins was a member of the volleyball team from 1983 to 1987. During her career she tallied 1,098 kills, 271 blocks and 1,274 digs and is Hofstra's all-time leader in service aces with 268. She also holds the single match record for block assists with 15 against Florida State.
Christine's freshman season (1983) was cut short by injury after five matches. She returned as a red-shirt freshman in 1984 and played in 36 matches, tallying 164 kills, 123 digs, 99 blocks and 37 service aces.
In 1985 Christine played in 38 matches and posted 144 kills, 321 digs, 57 blocks and 94 service aces. Her 94 aces ranked in the top 10 nationally and she was a first team All-East Coast Conference selection.
The 1986 season saw Christine once again earn first team All-ECC honors as well as team Most Valuable Player and All-ECAC accolades after compiling a team and conference-high 398 kills and 377 digs. She also added 54 service aces and 68 blocks.
As a senior in 1987 Christine posted 383 kills, a team-high 453 digs and 83 service aces en route to ECC and team Most Valuable Player honors.
During her five seasons, Hofstra won 118 matches and three East Coast Conference championships. At the time of her graduation, Christine held records for most digs in a match (25) and season (453), and her career total of 1,274 was also tops in the record book. She currently ranks in the top 10 in seven career records and is a member of the Hofstra Volleyball Court of Honor.
Following graduation with a degree in computer science, Christine would go on to become a senior C.O.B.O.L. programmer/analyst. She also became a certified volleyball official in Nassau County and coached the Monarch and Performance Juniors Volleyball Clubs.
She has also remained involved with the Hofstra Volleyball program, serving as a computer consultant for several years under her mentor and fellow Hall of Famer Fran Kalafer and, following Fran's retirement, Lauren Netherby. Christine also serves as a statistician during home volleyball matches.
Christine and her husband, Christopher, have three children - twins Jennifer and Patrick, and Brian. The Newins family resides in Levittown, New York.
