EMIL WOHLGEMUTH

Emil Wohlgemuth, a football student-athlete, played football for the Pride from 1981 through 1984 and was the first Hofstra receiver to tally 2,000 career receiving yards.

Emil finished his Hofstra tenure with a then-school record 2,304 yards and 161 receptions. Those records lasted 16 and 15 years, respectively, before being broken by Steve Jackson. Emil’s career yards total now stands sixth on Hofstra’s career list, while his reception total is also sixth.

Hofstra’s leading receiver in each of his four seasons, Emil hauled in 35 passes for 461 yards with five touchdowns as a freshman in 1981. The following season he had 40 catches for 590 yards and four scores. During his junior campaign in 1983, Emil recorded 26 receptions for 326 yards and five touchdowns and helped the Pride achieve a perfect regular season at 10-0.

In 1984 Emil enjoyed a breakout year in a 9-1 season. He earned All-America accolades after catching a then-single season record 60 passes for 927 yards while finding the end zone eight times. Emil’s record for single-season receptions stood for seven years and now ranks ninth on the single season list.

Following graduation Emil signed a free agent contract with the New York Jets and attended training camp in 1985. For the last 21 years, Emil has been in the insurance field and has worked for CNA and Liberty Mutual.
