PHIL MARINO

Phil Marino, a men’s lacrosse student-athlete from 1972 to 1975, was a two-time All-American for the Pride. During Phil’s tenure on the team, which was coached by Hall of Fame Coach Howdy Myers, Hofstra was 36-19, went to three NCAA Tournaments and was ranked in the top seven in the nation in 1973 (5), 1974 (7) and 1975 (6).

Phil was a first team All-American at midfield in 1973 as he helped the Pride win a Metropolitan Division championship, and then was named an honorable mention All-American on attack in 1975. In 1973 Phil also was the recipient of the U.S. Naval Academy Richard H. Seth Memorial Lacrosse Award, which was presented annually to an opposing player that the Navy coaches felt was the top player they faced that season.

Phil recorded 26 goals and 31 assists for 57 points in 1975, ranking eighth in the nation in assists and 13th in the nation in overall scoring. The 31 assists rank as the 15th-best single season total in school history, while the 53 points rank 23rd on the single season list.

Phil was the Most Valuable Player of the 1975 USILA North-South All-Star Game, the first of three Hofstra players to win the MVP Award, after tallying eight assists in the contest.

He was selected to the United States World Team in 1978 and competed in the International Lacrosse Federation World Championship in Stockport, England, that year as the United States finished second in the tournament.

In 1990 Phil was inducted into the Long Island Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
