MLAX: Hofstra's Sam Llinares Selected By Denver In The MLL Draft

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra Men's Lacrosse senior attackman Sam Llinares was selected by the Denver Outlaws in the 2016 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Collegiate Draft Friday afternoon.

Llinares, a native of Hauppauge, NY, was selected with the fifth pick in the fourth round by the Outlaws. Overall, he was the 31st selection in Friday's draft.

Llinares, who has received the CAA Preseason Player of the Year honor in both 2015 and 2016, supported the coaches decision by leading the conference with career-highs of 33 goals and 57 points and added 24 assists to earn the 2015 CAA Player of the Year honors. In the process, he became the first Hofstra student-athlete to post 50 points or more in consecutive seasons since Tom Kessler did it in 2000 and 2001.

The 2014 USILA All-American honorable mention was also voted to the All-CAA first team for the second consecutive season in 2015. Llinares tallied five hat-tricks last year including a career-best six goals against Manhattan. He also posted a career-high eight points against the Jaspers, a number he duplicated in a win over Providence.

Llinares, who was also named to the 2016 Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook Preseason All-America third team in addition to his All-CAA Preseason honor by that magazine, surpassed the 100-point plateau in his career in 2015. He enters the 2016 season with 73 goals and 69 assists for 142 points in 43 games during his Hofstra career. Llinares' 142 points is tied for 10th on the all-time Hofstra scoring list.

Llinares is Hofstra's highest MLL College Draft selection since the 2011 Draft when attackman Jay Card was selected with the 11th overall pick in the second round by the Long Island Lizards. Midfielder Steve Serling was also selected in the second round of that draft with the ninth pick by the Denver Outlaws.

Last year, Hofstra midfielders Mike Malave (46th pick) and John Reicherter (50th pick) were each selected in the seventh round by the New York Lizards and the Ohio Machine, respectively.
