Hofstra Rally Falls Short In Loss To Monmouth

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra waged a furious comeback to cut a seven-goal halftime deficit to one but ran out of time as Monmouth took a 13-12 CAA victory Saturday at James M. Shuart Stadium. The Pride outscored the Hawks, 10-4, in the second half and had the ball for a final possession with 10 seconds remaining. But a turnover with two seconds left prevented a final shot opportunity. Anthony Mollica and Gus Langtry each had two goals and two assists to lead the Pride.

Hofstra slipped to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play with the loss. Monmouth moved to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the CAA.

The Hawks built a 9-1 lead with 1:38 remaining in the first half before Mollica's second goal with just under a minute to play made it a 9-2 game at the half.

Hofstra would outscore the Hawks, 3-2, in the third quarter to trail, 11-5. The Pride offense came to life in the fourth with seven goals. Monmouth's Ty Caffarelli opened the fourth quarter scoring 1:19 into the period. But the Pride went on a five-goal run to make it a 12-10 game with 8:34 remaining on Drew Bogardus' second goal of the contest from Langtry.

Neither team would score until Monmouth scored what proved to be the difference maker with 1:41 to go as Evan O'Rourke found the back of the net. Trevor Natalie scored two goals in the final minute, the last with 26 seconds to go, to make it a one-goal game. The Hawks won the ensuing faceoff, but Will Delaney caused a turnover to give the Pride the ball back with 10 seconds to go. Hofstra rushed the ball upfield but a Monmouth defender forced a turnover to seal the win.

Caffarelli had four goals and an assist to lead the Hawks. Connor Gorman and Riley Chester each had two goals. Dylan Cadigan made 18 saves in goal for the Hawks.

Hofstra also got two goals from Parkes, Natalie, and Bogardus. Shea Kennedy made nine saves for the Pride.

Hofstra is back in action next Saturday at home against Sacred Heart with a 1 p.m. face-off.
