Hempstead, NY – Hofstra Men's Lacrosse alumnus Doug Shanahan has been named England's Senior Men's Lacrosse Head Coach, England Lacrosse announced Monday night.

Shanahan, who was appointed as England's Assistant Coach in July, replaces former English Men's National Team Head Coach Steve Lydon, who stepped down following a change in circumstances. Shanahan will lead Team England in the 2020 European Championship in Wroclaw, Poland before working towards the 2022 FIL World Championship in Coquitlam, Canada.

The inaugural recipient of the Tewaaraton Trophy in 2001, Shanahan was a standout student-athlete in both lacrosse and football at Hofstra. A four-year letterman in both programs between 1998 and 2001, he is the first two-sport, two-time All-American in Hofstra Athletics history. He was inducted into the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013.

A three-time All-American in lacrosse, Shanahan was also the recipient of the 2001 Lt. Raymond J. Enners Award as the Division I Lacrosse Player of the Year and the 2001 Lt. Donald J. McLaughlin Jr. Award as the Division I Midfielder of the Year. He scored 95 goals and 44 assists during his career, ranking 11th and 14th, respectively, on Hofstra's all-time lists. He also scooped up a school record 450 ground balls and won 528 of 868 face-offs for a .608 winning percentage.

Shanahan also earned All-America East honors four times, picking up first team honors as a freshman, as well as Rookie of the Year honors in 1998, as a sophomore in 1999 and as a senior in 2001 when he was also voted the league Most Valuable Player. He was selected to the second team as a junior. Shanahan was also named to the 2001 USILA North-South Senior All-Star Game where he captured the Most Valuable Player Award.

On the gridiron, Shanahan posted 279 tackles and 13 interceptions from his free safety position. He returned five interceptions and fumble recoveries for touchdowns and earned All-America honors in 2000 and 2001. Shanahan was a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award as a junior in 2000. He was also a free agent signee by the New York Jets and was the final defensive back released on the last day of training camp in 2002.

Shanahan was a part of six NCAA Tournaments during his tenure – three in football and three in lacrosse – including a lacrosse quarterfinals appearance in 2001. Following graduation, Shanahan was a member of the United States World Lacrosse Team in 2002 and 2006, earning the ILF's 2002 Best and Fairest Award, which is the equivalent of the Championships' Most Valuable Player Award. He was also voted to the All-World Team.

Shanahan was drafted first overall in the 2002 Major League Lacrosse Supplemental Draft by the Bridgeport Barrage and played with the team through the 2005 season, helping the Barrage (who had moved to Philadelphia) win the 2004 MLL Championship. The Chicago Machine selected him with the fourth pick of the 2006 MLL Expansion Draft. He spent three full seasons in Chicago, before getting traded to the Long Island Lizards in 2009. He also played for the New York Saints of the National Lacrosse League during the 2002 season.

Shanahan is currently the director of athletics and a physical education teacher at Imagine Charter Weston High School in South Florida. He has also served as boys lacrosse coach at Western High School since 2016.  During that time Western has won three consecutive District 29 championships with Shanahan being named Coach of the Year in all three seasons.
