Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra Men's Lacrosse team heads out on the road for the first time during the 2017 regular season on Saturday, February 25 when the Pride trek over to New Jersey for a battle against the Tigers of Princeton University. Game time at Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium is 1 p.m.
Princeton will video stream the contest through the Ivy League Digital Network (pay portal) as well as provide live game stats. Hofstra opened their season with an 11-9 victory over Monmouth (1-1) at James M. Shuart Stadium last Saturday. The Pride had two six-goal advantages in the contest, the latest at 11-5 after newcomer
Ryan Tierney's man-up goal with 1:11 remaining in the third quarter. But the Hawks of Monmouth scored four times in the final period, including two in the final minute to cut the deficit in the loss.
Three Pride players tallied hat-tricks in the game led by senior attackman
Josh Byrne, who posted six points in the season opener for the second consecutive season. He tallied three goals and three assists against the Hawks of Monmouth. Last year, Byrne began his Hofstra career with a four-goal, two-assist performance at eventual national champions, North Carolina.
Freshman
Ryan Tierney added three goals and one assist in his collegiate debut for Hofstra while junior midfielder
Brendan Kavanagh also tallied a hat-trick. Junior midfielder
Alex Moeser also scored a goal for the Pride as did junior defender
Tanner Griffin. For Griffin, it was the first goal of his collegiate career. Junior goalie
Jack Concannon made 11 saves in the contest including a big stop in the final 18 seconds on a point-blank shot by Griffin Figel.
The Pride was outshot in the contest, 41-26 and has 21 ground balls to 31 for the Hawks. Hofstra played without its two-time All-CAA first team selection
Kris Clarke due to injury and won just six of 21 face-offs.
The Tigers of Princeton enter Saturday's game with a 2-0 record following their 10-6 victory over Marist on Tuesday. The Tigers opened with a 22-8 victory over the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders last Saturday. In Princeton's most recent win over the Red Foxes of Marist, senior attackman Gavin McBride tallied three goals and two assists, freshman Michael Sowers added two goals and three assists and senior Zach Currier added three goals and one assist to lead the Tigers to victory. Junior goalie Tyler Blaisdell recorded 13 saves for his second win of the year.
Princeton is led in scoring by Sowers with four goals and eight assists, McBride has six goals and five assists while Currier has added seven goals and three assists. Blaisdell has posted a 5.33 goals against average with 18 saves and a .692 save percentage while playing 90 minutes of action in two games this year.
Hofstra and Princeton will be meeting for the 31st time in men's lacrosse with the Tigers holding a 16-14 series lead. The two teams met last season in Hempstead with the Pride posting an 11-10 overtime victory on
Josh Byrne's fifth goal of the contest just 14 seconds into the overtime period.
Brian von Bargen added two goals for the Pride. Concannon made 15 saves in the Pride goal for the victory. The Tigers were led by Ryan Ambler with two goals and four assists and McBride with three goals and one assist. Blaisdell recorded six saves in the Princeton cage.
After the Princeton contest, the Pride return home for the first of three Tuesday night games this season when they entertain the Highlanders of NJIT on February 28. Game time at James M. Shuart Stadium is 7 p.m.
