Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra Men's Lacrosse team is picked to finish third and four Pride players were voted to the All-Colonial Athletic Association Preseason team in the 2017 Preseason CAA Coaches Poll that was announced Monday.
Hofstra is picked to finish behind defending conference champion, Towson, which received five of the six first-place votes for 25 points, and Fairfield, which received the other first-place vote and 21 points. Hofstra, which had 15 points, was followed by Drexel (11), Delaware (10) and UMass (8).
In the All-CAA Preseason Team voting, Hofstra honorees included senior face-off specialist
Kris Clarke (Bellmore, NY) and junior goalie
Jack Concannon (Lindenhurst, NY), midfielder
Brendan Kavanagh (Rockville Centre, NY) and defender
Tanner Griffin (Loveland, OH). Senior
Josh Byrne (New Westminster, BC, Canada) was an honorable mention pick on the squad.
Clarke is a two-time All-CAA first team selection as well as an All-Rookie Team pick over his three seasons with the Pride. Last year, he led the conference and was 20th in Division I in face-off winning percentage with a .572 mark after winning 163 of 285 face-offs. Clarke also led the CAA and was 11th in Division I in ground balls per game with a 6.14 average after scooping up 86 loose balls. He also picked up two assists on the year.
Concannon is coming off his first All-CAA first team honor in 2016 after finishing second in the conference and 10th in the nation in save percentage (.568) and second in the CAA and 14th in Division I in goals against average (8.56). He played all but 15 minutes last season and made 167 saves while recording a 9-6 won-loss record.
Kavanagh had a breakout season in 2016, starting 11 of the 15 games that he played and finishing second on the team and sixth in the CAA in assists with 13. He also scored 10 goals, including sharing the team lead with five man-up goals, for 23 points.
Griffin also stood out in 2016, playing in all 15 games and picking up a career-high 25 ground balls. Very adept at forcing turnovers, he recorded six caused turnovers last year to bring his two-year total to 14. Griffin also assisted on one goal in 2016.
The Pride, who started their preseason drills a week ago, will have their first scrimmages of the preseason this Sunday, January 29 when they travel upstate for battles at Syracuse against the Orange (10 a.m.) and Le Moyne College (noon). Both scrimmages are closed to the public.
