Boston, Mass. and Newark, Del. – Hofstra Men's Soccer is off to a 2-0 start in Colonial Athletic Association play after defeating College of Charleston, 4-0, at James M. Shuart Stadium on Saturday. The Pride will hit the road for a pair of conference games this week, travelling to Northeastern for a 6 p.m. kickoff on Wednesday before heading to Delaware for a 7 p.m. matchup on Saturday.
Both games will be available via live stats, and Wednesday's contest at Northeastern will be broadcast live on the American Sports Network. See attached link for TV clearances.
Junior
Danny Elliott was named CAA Co-Player of the Week after scoring twice in Saturday's shutout win over the Cougars. Elliott now leads the team with four goals and eight points, having scored in three of the past four games.
Classmate
Meshack Eshun Addy netted the game's first goal, marking his second tally of the season, while sophomore
Daniel Massey closed the scoring for his first goal of the year.
The Pride, now 4-3-1 overall, did not even allow a shot on goal against College of Charleston, earning the clean sheet. With a stingy backline anchored by Preseason All-CAA pick senior
Harri Hawkins, Hofstra has allowed just one goal over its past four games, with that goal coming from No. 3 Syracuse. Sophomores
Leonard Arkhanhelskyi and
Alex Ashton have been sharing time in net.
Hofstra will be looking to stay hot on Wednesday when the team heads to Boston. Northeastern holds a 13-7-1 advantage in the all-time series, but in recent years, the matchups have been close, with four of the past five meetings needing overtime. The Pride took last year's game at home, winning 2-1, in double overtime.
The Huskies are off to a 1-1 start in conference play, having beaten Drexel, 2-0, but fallen to Delaware, 4-0, and are 2-6 overall, with the team's other win coming in a 1-0 overtime decision against Saint Joseph's.
Five players each have one goal for the Huskies this season, and senior Christian McKenna and sophomore Kori Bennett are tied for the team lead with three points each. Junior Jonathan Thuresson and freshman Matt Dabrowski have shared time in net, with Thuresson seeing more of the work. Thuresson has made 23 saves while posting a 1.78 goals-against average and .697 save percentage.
After facing off against the Huskies, the Pride will head to Delaware. The Blue Hens are the only other team to begin CAA play 2-0, and the last time these teams met was the 2015 CAA Championship, when Hofstra took a 2-0 win for the title. The Pride is 16-12-1 against the Blue Hens all-time, but four of the past six meetings between the sides have gone to overtime, with Delaware taking a 3-1-1 record in those matchups.
In 2016, the Blue Hens are 7-2, with their only blemishes coming in a 2-1 loss to Villanova and a 2-0 defeat by then-No. 19 Virginia Tech. Delaware cracked the NSCAA National Rankings earlier in the season, but dropped out after the loss to Villanova. The team is receiving votes in this week's iteration.
Senior Guillermo Delgado has been impressive for the Blue Hens, leading the team with six goals and five assists. In net, Todd Morton has made 27 saves, posting a 0.65 goals-against average and .818 save percentage.
The Pride will then step out of conference for a matchup with Virginia on Oct. 4.
