Hempstead, NY - Hofstra sophomore midfielder
Brendan Kavanagh has been named the GoHofstra.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Monday, April 25.
Kavanagh, a native of Rockville Centre, NY, recorded the game-winning goal and added two assists in the Pride's 10-9 overtime victory over Massachusetts at Garber Field in Amherst last Saturday.
Â
In that contest, Kavanagh assisted on
Zachary Franco's fourth quarter goal with 6:38 to play that tied the contest at 8-8. Just over three minutes later, he assisted on
Sam Llinares' second goal of the game and the 100th of his career to give the Pride a 9-8 advantage.
In the overtime, after the Pride defense forced a turnover to get the ball back in the final 30 seconds, Kavanagh, starting from the right edge of the box, went around the back of the UMass goal and beat Minutemen goalie Sean Sconone to his left side with a low shot for the victory.
Â
Kavanagh, a graduate of Kellenberg Memorial High School in nearby Uniondale, NY, is enjoying the best season of his young career with career-highs of nine goals, 12 assists and 21 points and 14 ground balls in 2016. He also extended his consecutive game point streak to eight and his assist streak to six straight games. He has posted six multi-point games this season.
Â
Kavanagh and the Pride will be back in action on Saturday, April 30 when Hofstra hosts the Tigers of Towson University in their CAA regular season finale at James M. Shuart Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m. Hofstra, which is in a three-way tie for first place with Towson and Fairfield, will be looking for a possible number one seed in the CAA Championship Tournament on May 5 and 7 with a victory over the Tigers and a Fairfield loss on Saturday.
