MSOC: Holland Named CAA Player Of The Week

Hempstead, N.Y. – Junior midfielder Joseph Holland was named the first Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week for the 2015 season, the league announced today.

Holland scored three goals in Hofstra's 2-0 start, including two goals off penalty kicks. His 61st-minute penalty kick goal opened the scoring in Hofstra's 2-1 win over No. 15 Syracuse on Friday and he scored two goals in the second half in the Pride's 4-0 victory over Vermont on Sunday.

Against a nationally ranked Orange squad, Holland took advantage of a straight red card assessed to Syracuse and converted a penalty kick goal at 60:29. Henry Crayton scored just 5:17 later to give Hofstra a 2-0 edge that the Pride needed after Syracuse scored a 71st-minute goal.

Hofstra scored all four goals against Vermont in the second half and Holland factored in three of the goals. The 2014 CAA assist leader capitalized on Rory Murphy's feed and put Hofstra ahead of the Catamounts, 2-0, with a 57th-minute goal. The London, England native then added his second penalty-kick goal of the season in the 82nd minute to provide the final margin.

In two games, Holland notched seven points and scored three goals on his four on-target shot attempts. The strong start comes after a 2014 season in which he earned All-CAA First-Team honors. A Hofstra player won the CAA Player of the Week award for the first time since Maid Memic on Oct. 13, 2014.

Elon goalkeeper Matthew Jegier was named the CAA Rookie of the Week following back-to-back shutouts over DePaul (4-0) and Saint Mary's (1-0).

Hofstra will next be in action against Army West Point in a road game on Friday at 12:30 p.m.
