WBB: Hofstra Starts CAA Play On Sunday Versus CofC

Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra will start Colonial Athletic Association play with a 2 p.m. game on Sunday against the College of Charleston from the Mack Sports Complex.

Hofstra (7-4) is coming off a 4-1 December and will start league play by returning home for the first time since Dec. 4.  For ticket information, please call the Hofstra Athletics Box Office at (516) HOF-TIXX or visit HofstraTickets.com. Free live video will be available via Pride Productions with live online audio also available as well as on terrestrial radio on WRHU (88.7 FM).

Hofstra saw a four-game winning streak snapped with a loss to Virginia Tech, but last month was a successful one as the Pride defeated an ACC-member for the first time under head coach Krista Kilburn-Steveskey with a road win against Boston College as well as victories over defending America East-champion Albany.

CofC (2-9) lost the first eight games to start the season before defeating Mercer at home on Dec. 21 for the first of the season. The Cougars lost on the road to South Carolina State, 60-51, before defeating USC Upstate to close the calendar year.

Sophomore Anjie White has provided Hofstra with an additional post presence in her first two games with the Pride. The George Washington University transfer posted five blocks against Virginia Tech, which tied a career high and marked the first five-block game for the Pride since Shante Evans did it versus Delaware on Feb. 28, 2013.

Junior guard Asia Jackson scored in double figures for the second time this season with a team-high 11 points against the Hokies at Cassell Coliseum. On the season, Hofstra has three players averaging in double figures in sophomores Kelly Loftus (11.9) and Elo Edeferioka (11.2) as well as freshman Ashunae Durant (10.4).

After playing one home game in December, the Pride will have two contests in a three-day span as Northeastern will enter on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Hofstra is 3-2 at home in 2014-15.

Hofstra is 0-2 in the all-time series against the College of Charleston. Last season marked the first campaign in which the Cougars were members of the Colonial Athletic Association and the Pride lost at home, 62-59, before falling at CofC, 87-74, in a televised game. Jackson had 11 points in that last contest.

The Cougars are shooting just 34.5 percent from the field as a team entering Dec. 30. Erin Hall has been the team's best offensive option with a team-high 11 points per game, making her the only CofC player to average in double figures.

Breanna Bolden and Christy Hewatt have been the best rebounding options for CofC as Bolden (6.4) and Hewatt (6.3) are running a tight race for the team lead on the glass. CofC will carry a negative 15.2 point scoring margin into the start of CAA play.

While CofC has struggled from the field, the Cougars will be facing a Hofstra defense that is holding teams to 35.9 percent shooting. The Pride has held seven teams to less than 40 percent from the field this season. Against back-to-back ACC members, Hofstra limited Boston College to 32.1 percent and Virginia Tech to 31.1. No team since 2012-13 has cracked the 50 percent mark against the Pride.
