Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra Baseball team hosts the University of Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens in a Colonial Athletic Association series this weekend at University Field. The series gets underway Friday at 3 p.m. and continues Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
Hofstra (18-20, 6-9 CAA) enters the series having won four of its last five games and currently sits in eighth place in the conference. However, due to the ineligibility of Old Dominion and Georgia State due to their leaving the CAA after the year, Hofstra currently owns the sixth and final spot for the CAA Championship. The Pride are two games ahead in the loss column over James Madison. Junior catcher Matt Reistetter continues to lead the Pride with a .345 average and 28 RBIs. Junior outfielder Kenny Jackson has a team-best five home runs, while senior second baseman Austin Nyman has 20 steals to pace the Pride running game.
Delaware enters the weekend with a 25-10 record overall and a 10-5 mark in the CAA. That puts the Blue Hens in third place. Delaware has won two straight games, including an 8-3 win over Villanova this past Wednesday in the championship game of the Liberty Bell Classic at Citizen's Bank Park. CAA Preseason Co-Player of the Year Jimmy Yezzo leads the Delaware offense with a .449 average, 20 doubles, nine home runs and 46 RBIs. Nick Ferdinand had a .368 average, six homers and 37 RBIs, while Brock Niggebrugge is batting .364 with 27 RBIs.
Pitching matchups for the weekend are as follows:
Friday: David D'Errico (2-1, 4.94) vs. Chad Kuhl (5-2, 3.39)
Saturday: Joe Burg (3-3, 3.96) vs. Adam Davis (4-4, 4.13)
Sunday: TBA vs. Matt Soren (3-1, 2.03)
Hofstra and Delaware have met 80 times in the past with the Blue Hens holding a 60-20 advantage in the series. Hofstra did have a road sweep last season, but Delaware got its revenge by ending the Pride's season at the CAA Championship in Harrisonburg with a pair of wins.
