Hofstra Advances In Winner's Bracket Following Second Consecutive Shutout

Wilmington, NC - A trio of Hofstra pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout, the second in as many games, as the fifth-seeded Pride blanked #2 Northeastern, 6-0, in a winners bracket game of the CAA Baseball Championship on Thursday night at Brooks Field. Gabriel Melara paced the Hofstra offense with four hits and two RBIs, while Tyler Castrataro had three hits and two RBIs.

Hofstra (22-27) advances to the winner's bracket final, where it will meet top-seeded Campbell at 7 p.m. on Friday. Northeastern (34-20) will play an elimination game at 3 p.m. on Friday against either Monmouth or UNCW.

Freshman starter Nick Reese went the first 3 ⅔ and gave up a single before being relieved by Joseph Curreri (1-1), who also surrendered a single in 4 1/3 innings to earn his first career win. Tanner Sanderoff came on with a runner on in the ninth and pitched out of trouble with a strikeout and a game-ending double play.

Melara went 4-for-5 with a triple, a run, and a stolen base. Castrataro went 3-for-4 with three singles.

Hofstra staged a two-out rally in the top of the first, scoring three runs. Melara began the rally with a triple into the right field corner. Nick Gallello followed with an RBI single, which was the only run the Pride would need. But after loading the bases on a walk and hit batter, Castrataro singled up the middle to score two runs for a 3-0 advantage.

The Pride added another two-out run in the second as CJ Griggs doubled down the right field line and came in on Melara's single to make it a 4-0.

Hofstra scored a run on a passed ball in the fifth and added another insurance run in the ninth as Griggs tripled and scored on Melara's fourth hit of the contest.

Robbie O'Connor (9-2) took the loss for the Huskies after allowing five runs on six hits over four innings. Harrison Feinberg and Carter Bentley had Northeastern's two hits.
