Hofstra's Season Ends With Two Close Losses At CAA Championship

Wilmington, NC - The Hofstra University baseball team's run at the CAA Championship came to an end Saturday with a pair of losses at Brooks Field on the campus of UNCW. The fifth-seeded Pride dropped a 5-3 decision to top-seeded Campbell in the winner's bracket final and then lost to Northeastern, 5-4, in an elimination game. Hofstra sees its season end at 22-29.

In the opening game of the day, Joey Morton's three-run homer in the sixth inning proved to be the difference for Campbell (41-15).

Campbell scored an unearned run in the fourth inning to end Hofstra's streak of 19 scoreless innings in the championship. Carlos Lugo and Jonah Oster opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Lugo would come around to score when the Pride committed an error while attempting to turn a double play. The Camels would add three runs In the sixth as Jett Music walked and Lugo singled before Morton homered to right to extend the Campbell lead to 4-0.

Hofstra was able to cut the deficit in half in the top of the seventh. Tyler Cox and Nick Biddle had back-to-back base hits. Two wild pitches allowed Cox to score and Biddle to reach third base before scoring on Danny Corona's sacrifice fly to make it 4-2.

Logan Chapman's solo home run to right field extended the Camels' lead back to three in the bottom of the seventh before Hofstra made it interesting in the ninth. Tyler Cox led off with his seventh home run of the season and Corona's two-out single put the tying run on base. However, Lugo came in from the outfield to record the final out.

Carlos Lugo went 2-for-4 and scored twice for Campbell before notching his second save. Starting pitcher Zach Sabers (5-2) earned the win after allowing two runs over 6 1/3 innings.

Hofstra got two hits each from Cox, Biddle, and Gabriel Melara. Pitcher Carlos Martinez (6-3) came back on short rest after starting Wednesday and struck out eight over 5 ⅔ innings. 

In the second game, Northeastern jumped out to a 5-0 lead after five innings. The Huskies got an RBI single from Matt Brinker in the first. Northeastern added two runs in the third on a bases loaded walk to AJ Aschettino and a sacrifice fly from Carmelo Musacchia, and two more in the fifth on an Aschettino home run. 

Hofstra pushed across three runs in the sixth without a base hit as four walks, a hit batter, and two wild pitches brought the Pride to within two. The Pride would make one final push in the ninth as Biddle singled and Nick Gallello walked. Pinch hitter Nate Lynn delivered a two-out RBI single, but Northeastern closer Andrew Wertz came on and got the final out to send Northeastern to the championship game against Campbell. 

Biddle finished with a pair of hits in the game. Tanner Sanderoff (3-5) started and took the loss for the Pride, allowing three runs on three hits. 

Ryan Griffin (7-2) earned the win for the Huskies (36-20), allowing three runs on one hit over 5 â…“ innings. Wertz notched his fifth save.

Notes:
-Martinez recorded his 200th career strikeout.
-Cox's home run in the opener was his seventh of the season.
