Hempstead, NY - William & Mary starter Matt Davenport
scattered five hits and struck out 12 in a complete game shutout victory over
Hofstra, 11-0, in the second game of a doubleheader at University Field. Hofstra
had won game one, 10-9, in 11 innings.
The Tribe improved to 31-24, 12-17 in the CAA with the win,
while Hofstra slipped to 32-20, 19-10 in league action. The game had no
postseason implications for the Pride, which had clinched the second seed in
the upcoming CAA Championship in game one. But William & Mary needed to win
and get some help to keep its playoff hopes alive. While the Tribe did their
part, Towson's win over James Madison eliminated William & Mary from
contention for the sixth seed.
The Tribe chased Hofstra starter John Tiedemann (7-4) after
just 1 1/3 innings. The junior allowed three hits and five runs. Ryan Lindemuth
provided all the offense that W&M would need with a two-run home run in the
first. Lindemuth would finish 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored on
the day. William & Mary would add three runs in the second, two in the
fourth and fifth and single runs in the sixth and seventh.
Davenport (7-5) needed just 102 pitches to post the first
shutout of the Pride this season. Matt Ford had two of Hofstra's five hits on
the day.
In addition to Lindemuth, Sean Aiken and Michael Katz added
three hits for the Tribe.
Hofstra relief pitcher Gregg Lettini was the only Pride
hurler to not get scored on as he pitched two innings of one-hit ball to close
out the game.
The series concludes Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
