Towson, MD - Towson starter Michael Trionfo allowed six hits and one run over
5 1/3 innings and the Tigers held off a ninth inning rally from the Pride in a 4-3
win in the opening game of a Colonial Athletic Association series at Schuerholz
Field Friday afternoon.
Hofstra falls to 29-19 overall and 16-9 in conference.
Towson improves to 23-27 overall and 12-13 in CAA play.
Towson took a 1-0 lead in the second as Kurtis Voytell
walked to lead off the inning and went to third on a double by Andrew Parker.
Zach Fisher then beat out a bunt for a base hit that drove in Voytell for the
first run of the game.
Hofstra evened things up in the fourth as Kenny Jackson
walked, moved to second on a Kevin Flynn single and came in to score on Matt Reistetter's single.
But Towson would take the lead back in the fifth, loading
the bases on two singles and a hit by pitch before Brendan Butler delivered a
two-run single to put the Tigers up, 3-1.
Hofstra would get a run back in the seventh as Reistetter
doubled and came home on a single by Taylor Stuart. The Tigers would add an
insurance run in the eighth, loading the bases on a hit by pitch and two walks
(one intentional) for Ben Winter, who reached on an RBI fielder's choice that
made it 4-2.
Hofstra threatened in the ninth, loading the bases with one
out. Danny Poma had a sacrifice fly that made it 4-3, but the Pride could not
get the tying run home.
Hofstra starter Joe Burg (4-1) allowed seven hits and three
runs in five innings of work, striking out three. He also walked one and hit
three batters as well.
Trionfo improved to 8-3 with the win, while Tyler Austin
pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.
Reistetter finished with three hits and two runs for the
Pride. Dalton Rouleau added two hits on the afternoon.
The series continues Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
