Hempstead, NY - Hofstra recorded a season-high 25 hits and
24 runs, scoring in every inning, as it ran its winning streak to seven games
with a 24-1 victory over the New York Institute of Technology Tuesday afternoon
at University Field.
Every Pride starter had at least one hit and senior right
fielder Danny Poma went 6-for-6 with two home runs, four runs scored and four
RBIs. The six-hit game was the first of his career. Joe Burg (2-0) went five
innings and allowed one run on four hits.
Hofstra (18-12) scored four times in the first inning as
junior second baseman Matt Ford had a two-run double and senior third baseman
T.J. Thomas hit his fourth home run of the season. The Pride would add a run in
the second on junior shortstop Dalton Rouleau's sacrifice fly.
The Pride then scored three times in the third. Sophomore
left fielder Kenny Jackson had an RBI single, sophomore designated hitter Bryan Verbitsky drew a bases loaded walk and junior center fielder hit the first of
two sacrifice flies on the day.
Hofstra would put the game out of reach with six runs in the
fourth. Poma had a two-run homer, Jackson a two-run single, Verbitsky an RBI
single and Nyman's second sac fly of the day to make it a 14-0 game.
NYIT (2-20) got on the board in the fifth as Nick Sebastian
walked and Robert Loftus singled to put men on first and second. Steven
McNamara then came through with a RBI single to put the Bears on the board.
Rouleau and Ford each had three hits on the day, while
junior first baseman Jared Hammer, Jackson, Thomas, Verbitsky and Nyman each
had two hits. Verbitsky finished with four RBIs, while Nyman, Jackson and
Thomas each contributed three.
The Bears recorded just five hits on the day with Joey
LaCugna getting two of them.
Hofstra got two innings of one-hit relief from junior Gregg Sarra and one inning of no-hit ball from freshman Brendan Mulligan and red-shirt freshman Nick Kozlowski.
NYIT starter John Duggan (1-3) took the loss, allowing seven
runs on seven hits in two innings.
The 25 hits were the most for the Pride since a 28-hit
showing on May 10, 2009 at Norfolk State. The 24 runs were the most since a
22-11 win over NYIT on April 6, 2010.
Hofstra is next in action at St. John's tomorrow afternoon
at 3 p.m.
