Dover, DE - Hofstra scored eight runs in the top of the
ninth inning to snap a 3-3 tie and posted an 11-3 win over Delaware State
Sunday afternoon at Soldier Field.
Hofstra, which took two of three games from the Hornets,
improves to 13-12 on the season. Delaware State falls to 15-12-1.
Hofstra had trailed 3-2 going into the seventh inning, but
the Pride manufactured a run as Austin Nyman singled and went to third on a
throwing error. Following a walk to Taylor Stuart, the pair attempted a double
steal. Stuart was out at second, but Nyman came in with the tying run.
After a scoreless eighth, Hofstra erupted for eight runs in
the ninth, bashing 10 hits and sending 13 men to the plate. The Pride scored seven of the runs with two
outs. Nyman singled to lead off the inning and went to second on a sacrifice.
Danny Poma then singled in Nyman with the go-ahead run. After a second out was
recorded, the Pride had three RBI doubles in a row from Jared Hammer, Kenny Jackson and Kevin Flynn to make it 7-3. Chris Nardo then came up as a pinch
hitter and crushed a two-run home run for a 9-3 advantage. Stuart would add a
two-run single later in the inning to close out the scoring.
Joe Burg pitched a perfect eighth inning to earn the win,
his first of the season. Cody Normand pitched a scoreless ninth for the Pride.
Poma finished 4-for-6 on the day with an RBI and three runs
scored, while Nyman was 4-for-4 with three runs. Hammer and Jackson each added
three hits on the day as the Pride recorded 18 in the contest.
Elliott Gardner (2-5) took the loss, allowing seven hits and
six runs in 1 2/3 innings of work.
Hofstra is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Albany
at 3 p.m.
