Bronx, NY - Jared Hammer went 3-for-4 in the opener with a
double and four RBIs and added three hits and three RBIs in game two as Hofstra
spilt a doubleheader with Fordham Sunday at Houlihan Field. Hofstra won game one, 7-2,
before Fordham took the nightcap, 6-5.
Hofstra and Fordham are both 4-7 on the season following the
split.
Hofstra jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game one, scoring single
runs in the first and third innings. Matt Ford drew a two-out walk in the first
inning, stole second and came in to score on Jared Hammer's single. The Pride
used their speed to tack on a second run in the third as Austin Nyman laced a
one-out single, stole second, moved to third on an infield out and then scored
on an infield single by Danny Poma.
But the Rams evened the ledger in the fourth as Ryan Maghini
led off with a ground rule double and went to third on an infield out. Stephen
McSherry followed with a single that plated the first Fordham run. McSherry
would move to second on an out and then scored on Brian Maghini's single to knot
the score at two.
Hofstra went back up in the sixth, again with two outs, as
Poma walked and went to second on a single by Ford. After a double steal,
Hammer delivered a two-run double to right to make it a 4-2 game in favor of
the Pride. The Pride extended the lead to 6-2 in the seventh as Bryan Verbitsky's RBI double drove in T.J. Thomas and Nyman had an RBI single that
drove in Verbitsky. Hammer drove home Ford once again in the eighth with a
single to account for Hofstra's final run.
John Tiedemann (1-1) went six innings for the Pride,
allowing four hits, two runs and two walks while striking out six. A trio of
relievers - Cody Normand, Joe Burg and Jared Rogers - closed out the game.
Joseph Charest (0-2) took the loss for Fordham after allowing six runs on eight
hits in 6 1/3 innings of work.
In game two, Fordham held a 5-0 lead after four innings, but
the Pride struck for five run in the top of the fifth to tie the game before
the Rams pushed the go-ahead run across in the bottom of the inning and held on
for a 6-5 win.
Fordham opened the scoring in the first, as Tim Swatek
singled up the middle with one out and stole second. Swatek moved to third on
Ryan Maghini's infield single, and then scored on Mike Mauri's RBI single.
The Rams added to the lead in the fourth, scoring four times
in the frame. Brian Kownacki began things with a single, and moved to second when
Brendan Maghini was hit by a pitch. Kownacki and Maghini then pulled off a
double steal with the throw going into center field, allowing Kownacki to score
and Maghini to move to third.
After a strikeout, Matthew Cianci also struck out, but the
ball went to the backstop, allowing him to reach base with Maghini scoring on
the wild pitch. After an error gave Fordham another base runner, Ryan Maghini
hit a two-run double to left, scoring both Rams for a 5-0 lead.
Hofstra came right back to score five times in the top of
the fifth off Fordham starter John Porter and reliever Rich Anastasi to knot
the game at five. With two runs in and the bases loaded with one out, Anastasi
relieved Porter and picked up a strikeout for the second out of the inning.
Hammer though continued his big day with a bases clearing double to tie the
game.
Fordham responded immediately to the Hofstra surge, going
back ahead, 6-5, in the bottom of the frame. McSherry opened with a single and
was sacrificed to second by Kownacki. Brendan Maghini followed with an
RBI-single to center, scoring McSherry from second.
The score remained in favor of the Rams, heading into the
seventh, as Ford doubled with one out for Hofstra. Fordham reliever Jeremy Adel
came in for Anastasi and got Hammer to ground out for the second out of the
frame. Kenny Jackson then lifted a fly ball to center for Hofstra, but Cianci
came up with a diving catch to end the game in favor of the Rams.
Anastasi (2-0) recorded the win, allowing four hits with
four strikeouts in two innings of work, while Adel earned his second save of
the season. Andrew Barbarino took the loss for the Pride, allowing two runs on
two hits in 2/3 of an inning of relief.
Ford and Verbitsky each had two hits in game two.
Hofstra is back in action this coming weekend when it
travels to Fairfax, VA, to open CAA play against George Mason. First pitch
Friday afternoon is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
