Poughkeepsie, NY - Matt Ford's two-out, two-run double in
the eighth inning snapped a 7-7 tie and capped off a seven-run rally for the
Pride in a 9-7, come-from-behind win over Marist at the McCann Baseball Field
Tuesday afternoon.
Hofstra evens its record at 11-11 with its second straight
win and sixth in the last eight games. Marist falls to 7-12 with the loss.
The Red Foxes scored four runs in the fourth inning to
extend their lead to 7-2. Jake Berry had the big hit in the inning, a two-run
triple, and went 3-for-3 in the contest.
The Pride scored three times in the sixth to pull within
7-5. Jared Hammer singled to open the inning and advanced to second on a wild
pitch. Kenny Jackson doubled to put runners on second and third. T.J. Thomas
singled in Hammer to make it 7-3. Jackson and Thomas then pulled off a double
steal to make it a 7-4 game. After a ground out moved Thomas to third, Matt Reistetter reached on an error that allowed Thomas to score the third run of
the inning.
Hofstra tied the game with two runs in the seventh as Danny Poma laced a one-out single and went to second on a balk. Ford then drove in
his first run of the game with a single. One out later, Ford stole second and
then scored on Jackson's single to right to tie the score at 7.
Austin Nyman got the game-winning rally started in the
eighth with a one-out single and went to second on a bunt single by Taylor Stuart. Following a pop out from Poma, Ford took a 2-0 offering from losing pitcher
Brandon Dolan (2-2) to right center to score both runners.
Ford finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while Stuart, Poma,
Jackson and Nyman also had two hits each as the Pride recorded 13 hits on the
afternoon. Hofstra, which leads the nation in stolen bases per game at 3.35 per
contest, upped its average with eight today including two by Nyman.
Brett Schreiber (1-1) picked up the win for the Pride with
two innings of scoreless relief. Andrew Barbarino pitched the ninth to notch
his first save, escaping trouble thanks to his catcher Reistetter. He walked
his first batter, Mark Stuckey who was then picked off first by Reistetter.
Zach Shank reached on an infield single and Alec Petrone walked to put the
tying runs on base. But Barbarino struck out Eric Helmrich and Reistetter proceeded
to pick Shank off second for the final out.
Hofstra is back in action this weekend at Delaware State. The three-game set
begins Friday in Dover, DE, at 3 p.m.
