Norfolk, VA - Hofstra sent 13 men to the plate in an
eight-run fourth inning en route to an 11-1 rain shortened victory over Old
Dominion at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. The game was called after six
innings.
The win improved Hofstra's record to 10-11 overall and 6-3
in the CAA. It was Hofstra's second straight CAA series win as well. Old
Dominion falls to 9-14 and 2-4 in league play.
The Pride opened the scoring in the second as Kenny Jackson
singled and later scored on an Austin Nyman double. Hofstra went up 2-0 in the
third as Danny Poma led off with a home run, his third of the year.
Hofstra put the game away with an eight-run fourth inning. T.J. Thomas led off with a walk and moved to second on a balk. Matt Reistetter
doubled home Thomas and Moved to third as Nyman reached on an error. A stolen
base and a walk to Taylor Stuart loaded the bases. Poma then delivered a
run-scoring single to make it 4-0. Matt Ford singled home a fifth run and
another scored on a throwing error on the play to make it 6-0. Jared Hammer
then cleared the base runners with a double to make it 8-0. Jackson singled to
put runners on the corners and Thomas came through with an RBI single for a 9-0
lead. Kevin Flynn walked to load the bases and Reistetter then grounded out to
push across the final run of the inning for a 10-0 lead.
The Pride would tack on its final run in the fifth as Stuart
led off with his first home run of the year.
Old Dominion would put together a two-out rally against
Pride reliever Cody Normand in the sixth. Three walks loaded the bases and
Brent Frazier reached on an infield single to snap the Pride's attempt at a
shutout.
Stuart, Poma and Jackson each had two hits on the afternoon
to pace Hofstra's offense as the Pride recorded 11 hits on the day. Reistetter, Poma and Hammer each had two RBIs.
Freshman Dave Jesch went 5 2/3 innings to improve to 3-0 on
the year. He allowed five hits, no runs and struck out seven batters.
Phil McCarthy lasted 3 1/3 innings for ODU and allowed seven
hits and eight runs to fall to 0-3.
Hofstra is back in action with a non-conference game at
Marist on Tuesday.
