Norfolk, VA - Old Dominion had 17 hits, including four home
runs, in a 13-5 win Saturday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.
Hofstra falls to 9-11 overall and 5-3 in the CAA with the
loss and sees its' five game conference win streak halted. Old Dominion
improves to 9-13 overall and 2-3 in the CAA.
ODU erupted for six runs in the second inning to off Pride
starter John Tiedemann. Chris Baker led off with his sixth home run of the season
and second in as many games. Joey Burney
followed two batters later with a two-run shot for a 3-0 ODU lead. A fourth run
scored on a Hofstra throwing error and then Josh Wright doubled home two runs
for a 6-0 Monarchs lead.
Burney hit a solo home run to lead off the third inning and
Brandon Shelton would get hit with the bases loaded to bring home another run
for an 8-0 lead.
Hofstra got on the board in the fourth as Danny Poma walked,
stole second and came in to score on a single by Jared Hammer. Following a
lengthy rain delay of 1:19 after the top of the fourth, Josh Tutwiler led off
the bottom of the inning with a solo homer to make it 9-1. Josh Eldridge later knocked in three runs with
a bases loaded triple in the fifth inning.
Hofstra would score two runs in the fifth on a Christopher Nardo home run, the first of his career. The Pride would add two runs in the
seventh on RBI singles from Poma and Taylor Stuart.
Brandon Smith picked up the win in relief as he pitched four
innings and struck out four to improve to 4-0 on the season. Tiedemann took the
loss and fell to 2-3 after allowing five hits and six runs (three earned) in 1
2/3 innings. John Krause pitched three scoreless innings of relief for Hofstra,
allowing two hits over the final three frames.
Nardo and Kenny Jackson had two hits to lead the Pride
offense.
The teams close out the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
