Riverdale, NY - Andrew Gorecki and Aidan O'Leary each had
two hits and two RBIs as Manhattan snapped Hofstra's four-game winning streak
with a 9-4 win at Van Cortlandt Park this afternoon.
Hofstra falls to 8-10 with the loss, while Manhattan
improves to 3-14 and win in its home opener.
Manhattan jumped out to a 4-0 lead, scoring two times in the
first and then twice more in the third. In the bottom of the first Anthony Vega
drew a one-out walk from Hofstra starter Brett Schreiber and went to second on
a ground out. Ramon Ortega was hit by a pitch and Gorecki followed that with a
single through the left side for a 1-0 lead. O'Leary then singled through the
left side as well to give Manhattan a 2-0 advantage.
The Jaspers used another clutch two-out hit in the third to
score as Yoandry Galan delivered a two-run single that plated Gorecki and
O'Leary to make it a 4-0 game.
The Pride got on the board in the fourth with two runs of
their own. Jared Hammer walked and went to second on Kenny Jackson's fielder's
choice that resulted in both runners reaching safely due to an error. Kevin Flynn followed with a single that scored Hammer and sent Jackson to third.
Jackson would come in on a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of Taylor Stuart to make it a 4-2 game.
But Manhattan loaded the bases with one out in the sixth and
pushed three more runs across to take a 7-2 lead. Ortega and O'Leary each had
RBI singles in the inning and Gorecki drove in a run with a walk.
The Jaspers went ahead, 9-2, with a pair of runs in the
eighth before Hofstra tacked on two runs in the ninth to make it a 9-4 final.
Mike Beers and Christopher Nardo each had RBI singles for Hofstra in the final
inning.
Schreiber (0-1) took the loss for the Pride, allowing five hits
and four runs in three innings. He struck out three batters and also hit three.
Taylor Sewitt (3-1) picked up the win in relief for the Jaspers, allowing three hits
and an unearned run in 4 2/3 innings.
Jackson had two hits and two runs scored for the Pride, while Hammer had a hit
and two runs scored.
Hofstra is back in action this weekend when it travels to
Old Dominion for a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series that begins
Friday at 6 p.m.
