Cary, NC - Hofstra spotted Notre Dame leads in both ends of
a doubleheader and fought back in both contests, but still dropped both games,
6-3 and 10-8, at the USA Baseball National Training Complex Saturday afternoon.
In the opener, Notre Dame took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of
the first. Trey Mancini had a two-run
single in the inning. The Pride got on the scoreboard in the fourth as Danny Poma led off with a double and came around on a single by Matt Ford.
The Irish got the run back in the fifth as Ryan Bull singled
home Mancini to make it a 4-1 game. Hofstra made it a one-run contest with two
in the sixth. Poma led off with another double and went to third on an infield
single by Ford. After a walk loaded the bases, Kenny Jackson delivered a
two-run single. But Notre Dame escaped further damage with a fly out and an
inning-ending double play.
That would be all the scoring the Pride would manage and
Notre Dame added single runs in the sixth and eighth to account for the 6-3
final. Notre Dame starter Sean Fitzgerald scattered eight hits over 5 1/3
innings and allowed three runs to pick up the win. Dan Slania pitched a perfect
ninth to record the save. John Tiedemann started for the Pride and took the
loss after allowing seven hits, five walks and four runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Poma, Ford and leadoff hitter Dalton Rouleau each had two
hits to pace the Pride offense.
Notre Dame raced out to a 4-0 lead after four innings in the
nightcap, scoring two runs in the first and single runs in third and fourth.
Mancini drove in the first run with a two-out double and Joe Hudson plated
Mancini with a single. In the third inning, Bull drew a bases loaded walk that
forced home Frank DeSico for a 3-0 Irish lead. DeSico drove in Notre Dames
fourth run with a single that plated Jason McMurray.
Hofstra pushed three runs across in the fifth to make it a
one-run game. T.J. Thomas homered for the first Hofstra run, his second round
tripper in as many days. Then Kevin Flynn laced a two-out double and Taylor Stuart reached on an infield single to put runners on the corners. Rouleau
followed with a double that drove home both Flynn and Stuart to make it 4-3.
But Notre Dame scored three unearned runs in the bottom of
the inning to extend back to a 7-3 lead. Mac Hudgins had a two-run single in
the inning.
The Fighting Irish scored three more in the bottom of the
seventh to make it a 10-3 ball game before Hofstra rallied with three in the
eighth and two in the ninth. Rouleau lead off the eighth with a double and Poma
followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Ford drove in a run with
a single and two batters later Thomas delivered a double down the left field
line that scored two and make it 10-6.
Rouleau and Poma started the ninth inning rally as well with
a walk and a double. Ford drove in the first run with a ground out and Hared
Hammer followed with a double that scored Poma to make it 10-8. But Slania
retired Jackson, who represented the tying run, to preserve the win.
Adam Norton picked up the win for Notre Dame, allowing eight
hits and five runs in seven innings. Slania worked 2/3 of an inning to get his
second save of the day.
Jared Rogers took the loss for the Pride, allowing eight
hits and seven runs (four earned) in 4 2/3 innings.
Rouleau finished game two with three hits, two runs and two
RBIs while Thomas had two hits and three RBIs.
The teams conclude the series Sunday at Noon with a single
game.
