Hempstead, N.Y. - The Hofstra women's basketball team
will head to Princeton on Wednesday to face the Tigers in a non-conference
clash at Jadwin Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
Hofstra showed positive signs the last time out, taking a
talented Harvard squad into overtime before falling. The Pride erased a
seven-point halftime lead against the Crimson in a rematch of last season's
WNIT matchup, forcing the game beyond regulation thanks to two clutch free
throws by senior Shante Evans with less than 13 seconds left.
The Pride (1-5) will look to snap a five-game losing
streak. To do so, Hofstra will try and counter a Princeton squad that is 5-2
overall and winners of four of the last five. Evans has scored in double
figures in every game this season and is coming off an impressive week in which
she set Hofstra's all-time rebounding mark and averaged 21.5 points and 10.5
rebounds in playing Marist and Harvard.
For the season, Evans has continued to show the form that
led to two All-American selections and a spot on Wooden Award and Naismith
Trophy watch lists as well as finalist status for the Senior CLASS award. Evans
is averaging a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Princeton's strength has been the back court as the
Tigers are holding a 14.1 positive scoring margin after defeating UMBC,93-46,
in its previous game. Senior guard Niveen Rasheed is averaging 14.4 points. At
six-feet, she has also become Princeton's top rebounder, averaging 8.7 boards
per game.
The Tigers are 3-0 at home this season as Alex Wheatley
has provided consistent secondary scoring with 8.4 points per game along with
4.1 rebounds. The freshman forward could look to guard against Evans, who is
coming off a 24-point effort against fellow Ivy League-member Harvard last
week.
Princeton has employed a deep bench this season with only
Rasheed averaging more than 30 minutes. Ten players have logged more than 10
minutes per game thus far. Conversely, Hofstra has seen a younger lineup play
more minutes as the unit gains experience against a difficult non-conference
schedule.
Freshman Asia Jackson is averaging 4.5 points and is
averaging 19 minutes while sophomore Andreana Thomas has been a workhorse (team-high
34.7 minutes) in her first season as a starter for the Pride. All five of
Hofstra's usual starters (Evans, Jackson, Thomas, Anma Onyeuku and Candace Bond) are averaging close to 20 minutes.
Though she has started just two of the six games, junior
Annie Payton has become a long-range shooting threat for Hofstra. Payton has
connected on 10 of the Pride's 28 three-pointers this year and is averaging
10.8 points. Payton has also generated eight steals.
Onyeuku continues to be a revelation as a post player for
Hofstra. The junior posted a career-high 13 rebounds against the Crimson while
also scoring 12 points. She has finished in double digits in rebounding three
times this season and notched her first double-double of the campaign. Her 6.8
rebounding average trails only Evans on the team.
