BB: Pride Fall In Ninth Inning To Northeastern

4/9/2011 10:19:00 PM

Brookline, MA - Pete Castoldi's two-out single in the bottom of the ninth drove in the game's only run and gave Northeastern a 1-0 win over Hofstra Saturday afternoon. Northeastern starter Andrew Leenhouts allowed two hits over eight innings, while Dylan Maki earned the win in relief.

Northeastern improves to 7-20 with the win, 3-8 in the CAA. Hofstra falls to 6-19, 5-9 in conference action.

Hofstra starter Rob Kumbatovic allowed six hits and five walks over seven innings with five strikeouts. Reliever Jeff Guthridge took the loss, allowing one hit, one run and three walks (two intentional) in an inning and 2/3.

Connor Lyons led off the ninth inning with a walk and was sacrificed to second. After Guthridge uncorked a wild pitch to send Lyons to third, Hofstra elected to intentionally walk Matt Miller and Jeff Dunlap to load the bases and set up the force at every base. Jon Leroux flew out to shallow left for the second out before Castoldi singled to left center to give Northeastern the win.

Danny Poma (triple) and Jared Hammer (single) had the only Hofstra hits on the day. Guthridge fell to 1-1 on the season, while Maki improved to 2-1.

The Pride, who lost 3-0 in the opening game Friday, were shutout in back-to-back games for the first time since 1989 (1-0 and 18-0 versus Delaware).

The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. as Hofstra will look to avoid being swept.
