Hofstra Powers Past Stony Brook In Series Opener

Hempstead, NY - Danny Corona and Tyler Castrataro hit three-run home runs, and Michael Brown launched a two-run shot as Hofstra took an 11-5 victory over Stony Brook Friday in the opening game of a CAA series at University Field. Carlos Martinez struck out seven batters over six innings to earn the win.

Hofstra moved to 11-16 overall and 6-7 in the CAA with the victory. The Seawolves dropped to 9-21 overall and 6-10 in league play. 

The Pride scored five times in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by Corona's three run shot to right field that capped the scoring. Nick Gallello and Gabriel Melara started the scoring with RBI singles. 

After the Seawolves got two runs back in the second, Castrataro would launch a three-run shot well over the fence in left field to extend the Pride's lead to 8-2. Brown would hit a two-run home run in the sixth to make it a 10-3 game. Michael Craig would add an RBI double in the seventh for an 11-3 cushion before Stony Brook tacked on two runs in the eighth. 

Martinez (1-1) allowed three runs on six hits in a 100-pitch outing. His seven strikeouts matched his season-high. Maddon McArthur allowed two runs over two innings of relief, while Michael D'Ambrosio tossed a scoreless ninth.

Melara, Castrataro and Craig each had a pair of hits on the day. Corona, Melara, and Castrataro each scored two runs. 

Scott Gell had two hits and two RBIs for the Seawolves. Paul Dulanto, who entered as a pinch hitter, had an RBI triple. Starter Hunter Colagrande (1-2) took the loss, allowing eight runs on five hits over three innings.

The teams return to play game two of the series Saturday at 1 p.m.

Notes:
-Hofstra is 21-23 all-time against the Seawolves. 
-The Pride went 5-7 with runners in scoring position.
-Stony Brook was 2-12 with RISP.
-Melara extended his hitting streak to 11 games, while Brown has an eight-game streak.
