Hofstra Falls In Extra Innings To Stony Brook

Hempstead, NY - Nicholas Dromboski's infield single in the top of the 10th inning broke a 11-11 tie and the Seawolves escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the bottom of the inning to take a 12-11 victory over Hofstra Sunday at University Field. Hofstra had forced extra innings in the bottom of the ninth by scoring twice.

Hofstra dropped to 11-18 overall and 6-9 in the CAA with the loss. Stony Brook moved to 11-21 overall and 8-10 in the CAA with the win and took their second consecutive CAA series.

The game was a back-and forth affair with each team rallying from deficits. The Seawolves scored three times in the first only for the Pride to answer with four in their first turn at bat. Trailing 7-5 in the fifth, Hofstra scored three runs over the next two innings to take a 8-7 lead on RBI singles from Gabriel Melara and CJ Griggs. Facing an 11-9 deficit going into their final at-bat, the Pride got a solo home run from Nick Gallello (his second of the game) and an RBI double from Danny Corona that tied the score.

In the 10th, Stony Brook had runners on first and third with one out following a leadoff single from Mike Cervoni, a sacrifice bunt, and a single up the middle from Nick Zampieron. Dromboski then hit one in the hole between short and third that was fielded by shortstop Michael Brown, but he had no play as Cervoni scored the go-ahead run.

Brown would lead off the bottom of the inning with a triple off the wall in centerfield. Stony Brook pitcher Matthew Canizares (1-2) hit the next two batters to load the bases. He then induced a fielder's choice grounder to get the out at home, an infield popup, and a groundout to escape the jam and give the Seawolves the win.

Reliever Chirs Bedford (0-2), Hofstra's sixth pitcher, took the loss after allowing one run on three hits over two innings.

Gallello had three hits and two RBIs for the Pride, while Corona had two hits. Tyler Cox had a pair of sacrifice flies and drove in three runs.

Chris Carson and Scott Gell each drove in four runs for the Seawolves.

Hofstra returns to action Tuesday at St. John's with a 3 p.m. first pitch in Queens.

Notes:
-Brown recorded his 100th career hit with the 10th inning triple.
-Gallello picked up his first multi-home run game.
-Hofstra starter Nick Reese settled down after the first inning and had five strikeouts in four innings of work.
