HOFSTRA'S BULLPEN KEYS FIRST ROAD WIN OF SEASON

4/1/2009 5:00:00 AM

Stony Brook, NY -- Senior Rob Kumbatovic and sophomore Jeff Guthridge contributed 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball out of the bullpen as Hofstra picked up its first road victory of the season in a 4-3 win over the Seawolves at Stony Brook's University Field.

Guthridge pitched the final three innings to earn Hofstra's first save of the season. The right-hander allowed just two base-runners as the Pride won its season-high third game in a row and improved to 5-15 overall.

Kumbatovic limited the Seawolves to just one run in 3 1/3 innings in his first relief outing of the season. After Stony Brook mounted a rally to cut a four-run deficit to one in the fourth, the schools zeros in the final five innings. Kumbatovic improved to 2-4 while Stony Brook starter Evan Stecko-Haley fell to 0-3.

Senior Tom Legregni (pictured) reached base three times, scoring a run while driving in another. Mark Stuckless continued to ignite Hofstra's offense from the leadoff spot, scoring twice against the Seawolves. The senior rightfielder has scored six combined runs in Hofstra's previous two games.

Hofstra jumped to a 4-0 lead thanks in part to three Stony Brook errors through the first three innings. Stuckless and Legregni started the game by working a walk and a hit-by-pitch before a throwing error on the shortstop allowed Stuckless to score from second.

Hofstra extended the lead in a three-run third aided by two Stony Brook errors. Stuckless and Legregni each laced back-to-back singles to start the inning, with Legregni picking up the RBI. Legregni scored Stecko-Haley's throwing error on Chris Mentrasti's ground ball. That chased Stecko-Haley, though Adam Perlo picked up the RBI groundout off reliever Marc Brown to build a four-run lead.

Stony Brook shrugged off the rough start, scoring twice in the third to chase Hofstra starter Scott A'Hara. Consecutive singles and a balk put runners on second and third with none out to start the inning before A'Hara forced a fielder's choice groundout at the plate. Nick Thode ensured Stony Brook would capitalize on its scoring chances, drilling a two-run double to right-centerfield.

After a a walk and a wild pitch put runners on the corners, Kumbatovic entered and forced a lineout. Chad Rebecca's sacrifice fly to left in the fourth was the only run he would give up and the lat time Stony Brook would score.

Guthridge entered to start the seventh and retired the side in order. Guthridge came back out in the eighth and Nick Thode beat out an infield single to shortstop before giving way to pinch runner Sal Intagilata, who promptly took second on a wild pitch.

But Guthridge settled down, inducing a pop up and a ground out before issuing an intentional walk to put runners on the corners. With the tying and go-ahead runs on base, Pat Cantwell hit a one-hopper back to the mound that Guthridge fielded easily, allowing the right-hander to escape the jam. Guthridge registered three strikeouts, with two coming in a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Guthridge forced Steve Mazzurco to strike out looking to end the game.

Junior third baseman Matt Prokopowicz, the Pride's RBI leader, entered the contest in the sixth, marking his first action since an injury forced him to leave the game against Siena March 24. Prokopowicz lined out hard to center and lofted a single to shallow left in the ninth in his only at-bats.

Hofstra will head to CAA-rival Virginia Commonwealth for its second conference road series of the season. The three-game set starts Friday at 7 p.m.
