Strong Pitching Carries Hofstra To Win At Rutgers

Piscataway, NJ - Hofstra received solid pitching performances from starter Joseph Curreri and relievers Nick Reese and Maddon McArthur in a 3-2 victory at Rutgers Tuesday night at Bainton Field. The victory was Hofstra's second in a row and third in the last four games. 

The Pride improved to 9-14 with the win, while Rutgers slipped to 15-13.

Curreri went the first 4 ⅓ innings, allowing one run on six hits with three strikeouts. Reese came on in relief and allowed a run on four hits over three innings with six strikeouts and earned the win to improve to 2-2. McArthur picked up his first save after allowing one hit over 1 ⅔ scoreless innings.

The Pride offense made the most of its seven hits to push across three runs. JJ DeVito had an RBI single in the third that tied the score at 1. Michael Brown continued his torrid hitting with an RBI single in the fifth and later came in to score what proved to be the winning run on Tyler Cox's sacrifice fly. 

George Holt went 2-3 for the Pride with a run scored, while Tyler Castrataro, Daniel Escalante, and Gabriel Melara each had one hit. 

Matt Chatelle went 3-3 for Rutgers with an RBI. Reliever Jacob Pederson (3-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing a pair of runs on three hits over two innings. 

Hofstra returns to action Thursday at Towson in the opener of a three-game CAA series. First pitch is at 3 p.m.

Notes:
-Reese earned his second consecutive winning decision. 
-This was Hofstra's fifth consecutive one-run game.
-Hofstra is 8-11 all-time versus Rutgers.
-Melara extended his hitting streak to a season-best seven games, while Brown has a five-game streak.
