Hofstra Drops Series Opener At Towson

Towson, MD - Gabriel Melara had a solo home run for Hofstra and the Pride staged a four-run rally in the ninth but Towson held on for a 9-6 victory in the opening game of a three-game CAA series at Schuerholz Park. Max D'Alessandro went 4-5 with two RBIs for the Tigers.

Hofstra dropped to 9-15 overall and 4-6 in CAA play. Towson improved to 12-14 overall and 3-10 in league action.

D'Alessandro put Towson up in the bottom of the first with an RBI single that scored Keldrin Rodriguez. Melara tied the game in the top of the second with his first home run of the season, a  shot to right field on a 3-2 offering from Towson starter Dutch DeProspero.

Towson would take the lead for good in the third, scoring three times. D'Alessandro had an RBI single, Frank Adamski Jr. had a sacrifice fly, and Nick Francuzenko added an RBI double. Brian Heckelman added a two-run home run in the fourth to extend the lead to 6-1.

Tyler Cox, who was 2-3 on the day, drove in a run for Hofstra in the fifth with an infield single. Trailing 9-2 going into the ninth, Hofstra made it a little interesting by starting the inning off with four consecutive singles. Nate Lynn, in his first career at-bat delivered an RBI single. Cox drew a bases-loaded walk to make it a 9-4 game. A double-play grounder brought in another run, while a wild pitch plated the Pride's sixth tally. But that was all Hofstra could manage in dropping the series opener.

Hofstra starter Chris Bedford (0-1) took the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits over 3 ⅓ innings. Jackson Bauer went the final 4 ⅔ and allowed three runs on nine hits.

DeProspero (2-3) got the win for the Tigers, allowing two runs on four hits over five innings. Ryder Jeske went three innings and allowed four runs, all in the ninth, while Jacob Whiteman came on for the final three outs in a non-save situation.

Hofstra and Towson will face off again Friday at 3 p.m.
