Big Ninth Inning Gives Hofstra Win At Towson

Towson, MD - Hofstra scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to snap a 6-6 tie to pick up a 9-6 victory over Towson Friday at Schuerholz Park. The win evened the CAA series between the team at one game apiece. Gabriel Melara had four hits, including two home runs, and drove in three runs.

Hofstra moved to 10-15 overall on the season with a 5-6 record in conference action. Towson dropped to 12-15 overall and 3-11 in the CAA.

Leading 6-3 going into the bottom of the eighth, Towson scored three times to tie the game. Nick LoBello had an RBI triple and then scored on a wild pitch. Brian Heckelman tied the game with a solo home run.

But the Pride bounced right back in the top of the ninth. CJ Griggs walked. Pinch-runner Giovanni Bausone advanced to second on Nick Gallello's single. Melara followed with a single to right that was misplayed for an error that allowed Bausone to score the go-ahead run. A fielder's choice and a stolen base put runners on second and third with two outs. Towson pitcher Joey Tuttoilmondo (1-2) then uncorked a pair of wild pitches to allow two additional runs to score.

Hofstra reliever Brayden Gregg came on in the ninth and, after a leadoff walk, induced a double play grounder and a pop up to notch his first save of the season. Maddon McArthur (2-1) earned the win in relief of starter Carlos Martinez, allowing a run on one hit in ⅔ of an inning.

Melara had solo home runs in the fourth and eighth innings and also delivered an RBI single in the sixth. It was his first four-hit game and first multi-home run game in a Hofstra uniform. Nick Biddle had three hits, including a double, and an RBI.

Nich Francuzenko had three RBIs for the Tigers. Tuttoilmondo surrendered four runs on six hits over the fine

The teams will conclude the three-game series Saturday at 2 p.m.
