Freshman guard Asia Jenkins had the first double-digit scoring game of her career with 15 points, but it wasn't enough as James Madison held Hofstra to 37% shooting en route to a 62-50 win over the Pride at the JMU Convocation Center on Thursday evening.
Hofstra saw its two-game win streak come to an end with the loss as they fall to 14-9 and 6-6 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. James Madison picked up its fourth straight victory and improves to 17-6 and 10-2 in conference action.
The Pride, which also got 10 points and five rebounds from senior guard Natty Fripp, was without the services of freshman guard and second-leading scorer Nicole Capurso who sat out the contest with an injury.
Hofstra would struggle from the field in the opening half as the Pride managed to shoot just 6-20 (30%) from the field and went into the break trailing 26-16. It would mark Hofstra's lowest scoring first half this season. The Pride was led by seven points from junior guard Sam Brigham and junior center Jess Fuller's six points and five rebounds, but a quick 5-0 run by the home squad with under seven minutes left in the half turned a 13-9 deficit into an 18-9 JMU advantage. A three-pointer from Brigham with 3:51 left allowed Hofstra to close the gap to 20-14, but the Dukes scored six of the final eight points of the stanza to take the double digit lead into the break.
A jumper to open the scoring in the second half from Fripp followed by a pair of free throws from senior guard Niki Williams at the 18:09 mark of the second stanza would allow the Pride to close the gap to 26-20. Hofstra would have multiple opportunities to close the deficit even further but were unable to capitalize before James Madison went on a 9-2 run to take a 35-22 lead after a layup from Courtney Hammer with 13:36 to play in regulation.
With the Dukes lead in double figures for the majority of the second stanza, a layup from Jenkins with 7:27 left would cut the JMU advantage to 10 points, 47-37. It would be as close as the Pride would get, though, as JMU held Hofstra at bay the remainder of the stanza on their way to the 12-point victory.
Dawn Evans, who missed the majority of the second half with an injury, had 10 points on 3-12 shooting for the Dukes, while Jalissa Taylor posted seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Fuller finished with seven points and nine rebounds for the Pride.
Hofstra will finish of its short three-game road trip on Sunday when they travel to North Carolina to face UNC Wilmington at 1 p.m.
