In a game that featured 34 runs, 36 hits and 10 pitchers, Stony Brook was able to hold off the Pride and post an 18-16 win Tuesday afternoon at University Field. Stony Brook had 16 hits, while the Pride bats delivered 20 hits. Stony Brook improves to 21-15 with the win, while Hofstra falls to 14-29.
Stony Brook scored eight runs on five hits and four Pride errors in the top of the first inning, chasing Hofstra starter Brody Fontaine after 1/3 of an inning. Chad Marshall had two hits and two RBIs in the inning, driving in the Seawolves first run with a double down the right field line and their eighth run with a single to left.
The Pride got one run back in the bottom of the inning as Matt Prokopowicz laced a two-out single and came in on Matt Kougasian's triple into the right field corner. The Pride added a second run in the second on a Dave Cole home run to pull within six, 8-2.
After a scoreless third, Stony Brook put three on the board in the fourth with Mike Stephan blasting a solo home run and three batters later, Steven Mazzurco knocked a two-run shot over the left field fence for an 11-2 lead. Hofstra would not go away and scored four times in the bottom of the fourth. Felix Adamkiewicz led off with a home run, John Kenny tripled and scored on a Chris Mentrasti sacrifice fly and following back-to-back walks, Anthony Sarno delivered a two-run double to cut the deficit to 11-6.
The Seawolves extended the lead to 14-6 in the seventh as Brian Witkowski had a two run home run and Stephen added a solo shot, his second of the game. But as was the story of the day, the Pride clawed back in the bottom of the frame by scoring five runs. Kenny had a two-run double in the inning, while Prokopowicz and Cole had RBI singles and Mentrasti delivered his second sacrifice fly of the game and Hofstra trailed 14-11 going into the eighth.
The Hofstra bullpen could not shut the Seawolves down in the eighth as Stony Brook scored four times, taking advantage of two Hofstra defensive miscues. Mike Tansey reached on a throwing error and moved to second when Mazzurco was hit by a Dan Lux pitch. Chad Rebecca then hit a grounder to second that was misplayed and the bases were loaded. Chris Maier then delivered a two-run single and took second on the throw to third. Nick Thode then greeted new pitcher Kevin Rigopolous with a double that plated two more runs for an 18-11 lead.
The Pride would not go quietly and scored four runs themselves in the lower half of the inning as Elliot Hagburg led off with a double and scored on Adamkiewicz's double. After a walk to Cole, Kenny delivered his third RBI of the game with a single. Two batters later, Prokopowicz drove in his third runs of the day with a two-run double to right-center that made the score 18-15. Hofstra would add one run in the ninth on Cole's RBI single that scored Adamkiewicz.
Fontaine took the loss for the Pride, lasting 1/3 of an inning and allowing four hits, eight runs (5 earned) and one walk. He falls to 3-5 on the season. Michael Barbot, the second of four Stony Brook pitchers gets credit for the win after allowing four runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings. Jordan Purington pitched the final 1 1/3 for the save.
Prokopowicz finished 5-for-5 with a double and three RBIs on the day, while Adamkiewicz was 4-for-6 with a home run, two doubles, four runs and two RBIs. Kenny and Cole each had three hits, three runs and three RBIs on the afternoon.
Stony Brook was led by Witkowski and Mazzurco's three-hit performances. Mazzurco also added three RBIs, while Witkowski had two RBIs. Stephen had two home runs and three RBIs for the Seawolves.
The Pride is next in action this Friday when they travel to Atlanta, GA, for a CAA series with Georgia State.
