KILBURN-STEVESKEY NAMES ASSISTANT COACHES

6/2/2006 10:50:00 AM

Krista Kilburn-Steveskey (pictured), named the 11th head coach of the Hofstra Women's Basketball program on May 16, today announced the appointment of three assistant coaches that will join her staff as the Pride begin preparations for the 2006-07 campaign.

Joining Kilburn-Steveskey will be Ginny Boggess, Carol Peterka and Danielle Santos.

"What an exciting day for Hofstra University and the Women's Basketball program," stated Kilburn-Steveskey.  "I am so thrilled to have three great assistant coaches with varied skills join our team.  Each one of them brings something special to the table; from being a three-time Olympian (Peterka), to working with a longtime NBA shooting instructor (Boggess) or playing basketball in the Southeastern Conference (Santos).  Most of all, I am impressed with the energy and positive approach each of them brings to the game of basketball every day."

Boggess joins the Hofstra staff after spending the last three years at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia.  Boggess assisted in all aspects of the Owls program, including serving as the lead assistant for Kennesaw's perimeter players.  She was also the individual summer camp director, while serving as the assistant team camp director.  A long-time instructor at basketball camps, Boggess assisted Jim Clayton, former National Basketball Association (NBA) shooting instructor, while serving as assistant camp director at Sports City U Basketball Camps in Teays Valley, West Virginia, from 1999 to 2005 and was the head coach of the Piedmont Pride 15-under AAU squad in 2003.  A 2003 graduate of Wingate University in Wingate, North Carolina, with a Bachelor of Science in communications, Boggess earned South Atlantic Conference (SAC) All-Freshmen Team honors in 2000 and SAC Honor Roll accolades from 1999 through 2003.

A long-time coach on the scholastic level, Peterka was the head coach at Harrison High School in Kennesaw, Georgia, from 1999 to 2005.  A former Olympic handball team member, Peterka was a member of the 1988, 1992 and 1996 United States Team Handball squads.  Peterka graduated from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in 1987 and was a member of the Golden Gopher women's basketball program.  A second team All-Big Ten selection in 1984, Peterka scored 1,441 points and grabbed 744 rebounds during her collegiate career.  She currently ranks seventh all-time in scoring and sixth all-time in rebounding in school history.

Santos, who just finished up her collegiate career at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, completes the Hofstra coaching staff.  A native of Marietta, Georgia, Santos majored in sports management at Florida and totaled 831 points, 395 rebounds and 265 assists in 107 career games.  Santos started 76 games during her time in Gainesville and this past season she ranked fourth on the team in scoring and second in assists in helping lead the Gators to the NCAA Tournament.

The new staff is taking over a squad that returns four starters and is coming off its first-ever Division I postseason appearance.  Hofstra finished 19-12 in 2005-06, which was the second-most wins in school history, and advanced to the first round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) after defeating Stony Brook in the preliminary round.
