PRIDE SNEAK PAST HUSKIES IN GAME ONE

5/5/2006 5:00:00 PM

Ryan Dunn (East Islip, NY/St. Anthony's - pictured) (5-4) threw six innings and allowed just one run as the Pride defeated the Northeastern Huskies, 3-2, this afternoon in Boston, MA.  With the win, Hofstra improves to 20-27-1 overall and 9-16 in the CAA, while Northeastern drops to 21-18 and 14-8 in the conference.

In this pitcher's duel, Northeastern struck first in the bottom half of the fourth inning as Dan Milano ripped a double down the right field line that plated Matt Morizio, who led off the inning with a base hit.

Down 1-0 heading into the top half of the sixth, the Pride answered back behind their senior class.  Senior third baseman Ricky Caputo (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) led off with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball and then stole third base.  Senior first baseman Mike Walsh (Norfolk, MA/King Philip Regional) hit a one-out single up the middle that scored Caputo.  Next, senior shortstop Josh Stern (Millwood, NY/Horace Greeley) lined a double down the left field line to put runners on second and third. Senior catcher Steve Oliveri (Huntington Station, NY/St. Anthony's) followed with a two-RBI single up the middle that plated Walsh and Stern, and put the Pride up 3-1.

Northeastern added a run in the ninth, but Hofstra escaped a jam as the game ended with runners on second and third.

Junior Jeff Denlea (Oyster Bay, NY/St. Dominic's) picked up his fifth save of the year.  David Huth (Akron, OH/Western Reserve Academy) was stellar out of the pen, throwing two key shutout innings.  Adam Ottavino (3-3) was tagged with the loss for the Huskies.
