HOFSTRA FALLS TO VCU

Freshman designated hitter Scott Sizemore went 3-for-3 and recorded three RBI to lead Virginia Commonwealth (17-10, 3-0 CAA) to a 10-2 win over Colonial Athletic
Association rival Hofstra (4-13, 0-3 CAA).

Matt Prendergast pitched seven complete innings, handing out five strikeouts and four hits.  The senior, now 5-0, held Hofstra to two runs, both in the second inning.  Rookie Brandon Moore came in to close the game in the top of the eighth, fanning five of the six Hofstra batters he faced.

The Pride scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the second.  J.P. Wechter doubled down the left line and was driven in by Ricky Caputo to take a 1-0 lead.  Mike Walsh also scored for Hofstra in the second on a single by Steve Oliveri.

VCU produced one run in the bottom of the second.  Jeff Parrish scored on a sacrifice fly by Barrett Ripley.The Rams took the lead in the fourth inning after Robbie Gragnani  reached first base on a Hofstra error and was later sent home by Matt Matheson.  With two outs, Sizemore hit a triple to send Roel Koolen and Eric Latrua across the plate.Sizemore scored on a single hit by Anthony Granato to improve the lead, 5-2.

Joe Meador began the fifth inning reaching first base on a bunt towards third base.  Meador scored on a fielder¹s choice and Gragnani, Koolen and Latura scored their second runs of the afternoon in the fifth.  Koolen doubled to send Gragnani home, and Matheson doubled down the left line to score Koolen and Latura.

The Rams added one run in the seventh with two outs as Granato doubled to
right field. Pete Farina singled to send Granato across the plate.

The Rams collected 14 hits and Hofstra marked four.  Kellen Taylor (0-2) pitched 4.1 innings for the Pride, giving up nine hits and eight runs. The sophomore struck out and walked two each.  Ryan Dunn replaced Taylor and pitched 2.2 innings.  He allowed four hits, two runs, walked one and struck out one.  John Fuhrman pitched for the Pride in the ninth.
