Philadelphia, PA (Feb. 6) - Drexel's Candice Williams broke a 65-65 tie on a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left to lead the Dragons to a 69-65 win over Hofstra on Thursday evening in Philadelphia.
The loss snaps a two-game winning for Hofstra and drops its record to 6-13 on the season and 3-7 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Drexel, meanwhile, improves to 8-12 overall and 4-7 in the conference.
Senior guard Jen Brickey had tied the score for Hofstra at 65-65 on a basket with 1:00 left, giving her a game-high 21 points. Drexel's Jackie Falson was fouled with 42 seconds left, but the Dragons got the rebound and called time-out. Williams was then fouled by Hofstra's Amaka Agugua and made both foul shots to give the Dragons lead.
Hofstra had one final chance to pull even, but Steph Frysinger picked up a big steal with 10 seconds remaining. Bridget Scanlan then sealed the win with two free throws with five seconds left to account for the final margin of 69-65.
The Pride led 41-37 at the half behind 17 points from Brickey, who shot 6-10 in the opening stanza. Hofstra led by as many as 11 points in the opening half at 35-24 on a Brickey basket with 3:44 left in the half, but Drexel caught fire and scored 13 points in the final 3:26 to pull within four at the break.
Agugua and Staceyann Claxton each scored for Hofstra at the start of the second half to push the Pride's lead back up to eight at 45-37, but the Dragons answered with an 11-2 run to take its first lead of the game at 48-47 on a Frysinger three-pointer. Drexel took its largest lead at 58-52 with 9:38 left on a Falson lay-up, but an 8-0 Hofstra run put the Pride back up 60-58 with 7:06 remaining on an Agugua lay-up.
Williams tied the score at 60-60 with 5:23 showing on the clock, and Agugua gave Hofstra its final lead of the contest at 63-62 on a fast break with 2:12 left. Scanlan answered with a huge three with 1:40 left before Brickey evened the score.
Agugua added 19 points on 9-12 shooting for Hofstra. Williams led the Dragons with 16 points off the bench, while Frysinger had 15 and Scanlan added 13.
Hofstra will next be in action when it entertains William & Mary on Saturday in the second part of a doubleheader. The Hofstra Men's Basketball team faces William & Mary at 1 p.m. with the women's game scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. Both games will be televised by Fox Sports New York.
