Sophomore forward Julie Sailer scored 16 of her team-high 18 points in the second half and three other Delaware players scored in double figures as the Blue Hens captured a 65-47 Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball win at the Bob Carpenter Center Sunday afternoon.
Sailer, the 2002 CAA Rookie of the Year, converted 10 of her 12 free throws as the Blue Hens hit on 17 of 21 shots from the charity stripe and used a huge 46-28 advantage on the boards to defeat Hofstra for the seventh straight time overall. Delaware remained undefeated against the Pride in Newark at 19-0.
The Hens, who stayed in a tie for first place in the CAA standings with UNC Wilmington, won for the fourth time in their last five outings to improve to 17-7, 12-3 CAA. Forward Tiara Malcom scored 11 of her 16 points in the opening stanza and added six rebounds, Carrie Timmins contributed 13 points, Allison Trapp added 10 points and five assists, and Christine Cole collected a game-high 13 rebounds for the Hens.
Hofstra, which dressed just eight players due to injuries, lost for the fifth straight game to fall to 7-17, 4-11 CAA. Jen Brickey, the CAA's leading scorer at 18.6 points per game, led the Pride with 17 points, including three three-pointers, but shot just 5 of 19 from the field. Rume Pela added 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench while Amaka Agugua added six points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The Pride shot just 30.4 percent from the field (17 of 56) for the game, including 28.1 percent (9 of 32) in the second stanza. Except for a 2-2 tie in the opening minute, Delaware led from start to finish. The Hens, backed by the play of Malcom, led by as much as 12 points in the first half before settling for a 29-20 lead at intermission.
The Hens stayed in control during the second 20 minutes as they led by at least six points the entire way and held off the Pride each time they got close. Delaware scored 9 of the first 14 points of the second half to go up 38-24 five minutes in, but Hofstra crept back and cut the lead to 38-32 with 12:27 remaining when Brickey and Staceyann Claxton delivered consecutive three-pointers.
But Delaware settled down, outscoring Hofstra 9-2 over the next four minutes to take control at 47-34 with 8:37 left. Sailer scored four points and Cole convereted a three-point play during the run. The Pride got back to within seven points at 47-40 with 6:18 left, but again Delaware answered, this time with a 14-2 run to put the game away. Sailer hit on all six free throws during the run while Timmins contributed five points, including a key three-pointer.
Hofstra will next be in action when it entertains North Carolina-Wilmington on Friday evening at 7 p.m. That game will mark Senior Night for the Pride's Class of 2003.
