The 13th-ranked North Carolina Women's Basketball team opened up the second half on a 27-0 run on its way to a 92-45 win over Hofstra in the Pride's season-opener on Sunday afternoon in Chapel Hill.
North Carolina improves to 2-0 with the win, while Hofstra slips to 0-1.
Hofstra kept the score close in the early going, pulling to within 12-10 at one point midway through the first half. However, North Carolina began to pull away at the end of the first half and took a 41-19 lead into intermission on a buzzer-beating three-pointer from freshman guard Ivory Latta.
The second half, though, saw the Tar Heels really take control with a 27-0 run over the first 9:30 to pull ahead 68-19. Senior center Tara Dilworth finally broke the run with a pair of free throws at the 10:29 mark, and then added the Pride's first second-half field goal a minute later.
Redshirt freshman guard Cigi McCollin led the way for Hofstra with 16 points in her return for the Pride after missing all but the first four games of the 2002-03 season with a knee injury. She shot 6-13 from the floor, including 4-9 from three-point territory and added six rebounds for the Pride. Dilworth had eight points, seven rebounds and a team-high four assists after also missing last season with an injury
Latta led the way for the Tar Heels with 18 points, seven assists and no turnovers in her second collegiate game. Forward Camille Little added 16 points, 6-6 center Candace Sutton had 14 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks, and guard Nikita Bell added 13 points.
Hofstra will next be in action when it plays its home opener against Quinnipiac on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
