Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra University Department of Athletics is saddened to announce the passing of former Pride baseball student-athlete and assistant softball coach Scott Coppola. 

Coppola passed away unexpectedly on August 3 at the age of 49. 

Coppola was a four-year letterwinner and two-year captain for the Pride from 1996 through 1999. A third baseman and pitcher, he played in 129 career games with 37 appearances as a pitcher. Coppola won 11 games and collected 130 strikeouts. At the plate, he batted .254 with six doubles, six triples, three home runs and 28 RBIs.

Coppola joined the Hofstra softball coaching staff in 2003 under Hall of Fame Coach Bill Edwards and served for two seasons. Before becoming an assistant coach, Coppola spent nearly two years as an events coordinator in the Hofstra Sports Facilities Department. 

A December 2002 graduate of Hofstra with a degree in marketing, Coppola is survived by his wife, Tara, and children, Kasey and Kyle. 

A wake will be held Friday, August 7 from 3-7 p.m. at Raynor and D'Andrea Funeral Home in West Sayville, New York with funeral services taking place Saturday, August 8 at 8 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Sayville, New York.
