Hofstra Places Four On All-CAA Teams

Hempstead, NY - Four members of the Hofstra University baseball team - Carlos Martinez, Michael Brown, CJ Griggs, and Gabriel Melara - were recognized for their stellar play this season by being named All-CAA as the conference announced the awards this afternoon on the eve of the CAA Championship. Postseason CAA honors are voted on by the league's 11 head coaches.

Martinez, a senior pitcher, was voted to the All-CAA First Team for the second time in his career after posting a 5-2 record, a 3.48 ERA, and 82 strikeouts over 64 â…” innings this season. The College Point, New York, native ranks among the CAA leaders in wins, ERA, strikeouts, and opponent batting average (.231).

Brown, a junior infielder, earned a spot on the All-CAA Second Team. The Pride's starting shortstop, Brown leads the team in batting at .327 and runs with 45. The Las Vegas, Nevada, native has added nine doubles, two triples, three home runs, 36 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases. The postseason accolade is the first of Brown's career. 

Griggs also picked up the first All-CAA honor of his career as he was named to the second team as a designated hitter. The sophomore from Baldwin Park, New York, is batting .303 with a team-best eight home runs. He has also added 10 doubles, 37 RBIs, and 37 runs scored. Griggs leads the CAA in on-base percentage at .486 and is second in the league in walks with 47. 

Melara was voted to the All-CAA Second Team in his first season with the Pride after transferring from Skyline College. The junior third baseman ranks second on the team with a .323 average and is tied for the team lead with 11 doubles. A San Francisco, California, native, Melara also has six home runs, 28 RBIs, and 37 runs scored. 

Hofstra will begin CAA Championship play Wednesday at 12 p.m. versus No. 4 Charleston. The Pride are the fifth seed.
