Carmichael, Speel Earn CAA Weekly Honors

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra University men's soccer forward Ryan Carmichael and goalkeeper Wessel Speel were recognized for their stellar play last week with Carmichael earning Coastal Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Week and Speel garnering CAA Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

Carmichael has been on a torrid pace offensively and in two games last week, the senior from Armagh, Northern Ireland tallied three goals and an assist in the Pride's 2-0 week. He started with a goal and an assist in a 3-0 victory against LIU last Tuesday and then closed with a two-goal performance in a 2-1 victory over William & Mary this past Saturday. Carmichael has scored at least a point in seven consecutive games and in eight of the Pride's nine games this season. He leads the team in scoring with seven goals and four assists for 18 points. 

Speel had a strong week on the defensive and offensive sides. The senior from Utrecht, The Netherlands totaled eight saves over the two contests and notched his first career assist in the win over William & Mary, Speel had five saves in recording his 20th career shutout in the win over LIU and then made three stops versus William & Mary. On the season, Speel has a 0.78 goals against average, four shutouts, and 24 saves. This is the second CAA Defensive Player of the Week honor for Speel, who also won the award on August 28.

Hofstra, ranked 24th in the nation, has a 6-1-2 record and will be back in action Tuesday night (7 p.m.) at home against Binghamton.
