Pre-Seeds Announced For EIWA Championships

Hempstead, NY - With the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships this weekend at the University of Pennsylvania, the conference announced the tournament pre-seeds today. 

Hofstra's Jacob Moon (9-13) is the No. 13 pre-seed at 125 pounds, a weight class that will earn six automatic qualifiers to the NCAA Championships. The top six pre-seeds - Brett Ungar (Cornell), Patrick Glory (Princeton), Ryan Miller (Cornell), Diego Sotelo (Harvard), Nick Babin (Columbia), and Ethan Berginc (Army West Point) - are all ranked in the top 33 by InterMat with Glory at No. 2.

The 133-pound weight class, which will receive five automatic bids, sees the Pride's Chase Liardi (10-11) as the No. 13 pre-seed. The top-five seeds - Vito Arujau (Cornell), Michael Colaiocco (Penn), Kurtis Phipps (Bucknell), Connor McGonagle (Lehigh), and Brendan Ferretti (Navy) - are all ranked by InterMat.

Justin Hoyle (16-11) checks in as the No. 9 pre-seed at 141 pounds, which has five automatic berths to the NCAA Championships. The top five pre-seeds - Vince Cornella (Cornell), Darren Miller (Bucknell), Josh Koderhandt (Navy), Matt Kazimir (Columbia), and Malyke Hines (Lehigh) - are ranked by InterMat. 

Michael Leandrou (2-13) is the No. 17 pre-seed at 149 pounds, which has two automatic qualifiers. The top four pre-seeds - Doug Zapf (Penn), Yianni Diakomihalis (Cornell), Max Brignola (Lehigh), and Trae McDaniel (Army West Point) - are ranked by InterMat with Diakohihalis at No. 1. 

Joe McGinty (5-8) is the No. 15 pre-seed at 157 pounds, which has three automatic qualifiers. The top three pre-seeds - Anthony Artalona (Penn), Josh Humphreys (Lehigh), and Cesar Alvan (Columbia) - are ranked by InterMat. 

The 165-pound weight class will have five automatic qualifiers. The Pride's Matt Rogers (4-8) will be the No. 16 pre-seed in a weight that features five nationally-ranked wrestlers in the top five pre-seeds - Julian Ramirez (Cornell), Quincy Monday (Princeton), Joshua Ogunsanya (Columbia), Evan Barczak (Drexel), and Brevin Cassella (Binghamton). 

Ross McFarland (12-9) enters the EIWA Championships at the No. 10 pre-seed at 174 pounds. The weight class will earn four automatic qualifiers and features six ranked wrestlers - Chris Foca (Cornell), Nick Incontrera (Penn), Benjamin Pasiuk (Army West Point), Mickey O'Malley (Drexel), Lennox Wolak (Columbia), and Philip Conigliaro (Harvard) among the top seven pre-seeds. 

Jacob Ferreira (19-8) is the Pride's highest pre-seed, checking in at No. 4 at 184 pounds. The weight will advance four wrestlers to the NCAA Championships and the top-five pre-seeds - Tate Samuelson (Lehigh), Jacob Nolan (Binghamton), Brian Bonino (Drexel), Ferreira, and David Key (Navy) - are each ranked by InterMat. 

Trey Rogers (17-3) is the No. 5 pre-seed at 197 pounds with five automatic berths up for grabs at the Championships. Michael Beard (Lehigh), the No. 2 ranked wrestler in the nation is the top pre-seed, with the next five pre-seeds - Jacob Cardenas (Cornell), Luke Stout (Princeton), Jacob Koser (Navy), Rogers, and Cole Urbas (Penn) - also nationally ranked. Rogers is looking for his second NCAA appearance.  

Zachary Knighton-Ward (16-11)enters the Championships as the No. 8 pre-seed at 285 pounds with six automatic bids coming out of the weight class. Eight of the top nine pre-seeds - Yaraslau Slavikouski (Harvard), Grady Griess (Navy), Cory Day (Binghamton), Nathan Taylor (Lehigh), Ben Goldin (Penn), Dorian Crosby (Bucknell), Travis Stefanik (Princeton), and Brendan Furman (Cornell) - are nationally ranked. Knighton-Ward will be looking to earn his fourth consecutive NCAA Championships bid. 

The EIWA Championships get underway Saturday, March 4 at 10:30 a.m. with the round of 32. The round of 16 and first round of consolations are set to begin at 10:50 a.m. to close out the first session. Session two will start at 4:30 p.m. with the quarterfinals and a second round of consolations, with the consolation third round set for 7:30 p.m.

Sunday begins at 10:30 a.m. with the semifinals and the consolation quarters followed by the consolation semifinals and 7th-place matches at 12:30 p.m. The EIWA Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place at 4:30 p.m. followed by the 5th-place, 3rd-place, and championship matches at 4:45 p.m. The Championships conclude at 7:15 p.m. with the presentation of the team and individual awards.
