Hempstead, NY – After being out of state this past weekend, the Hofstra field hockey team will stay in the state of New York for its next set of non-conference opponents. The Pride will first host LIU on Friday, September 16, at 3 p.m., before heading upstate to face #10 Syracuse on Sunday, September 18, at 1 p.m.
Friday's home contest will be streamed live on FloLive, with WRHU-FM (88.7) providing audio commentary, while Sunday's game at Syracuse will be carried on ACC Network Extra through the ESPN app. In addition, live statistics will be available for both games. The Pride split its set of games in Orono, Maine this past weekend to put them at 2-4 on the season. Hofstra suffered a 1-0 loss to Maine on Friday, before coming back on Saturday and defeating Kent State 2-1 in double overtime.
Simryn Desai netted the game-winner for the Pride against the Golden Flashes, while
Cami Larsson scored a game-tying penalty stroke in the fourth quarter, and
Merlijn van der Vegt totaled 12 saves against the two opponents.
Through six games, Larsson has produced four goals and one assist for nine points, putting her second in the Colonial Athletic Association for points scored and tied for second in goals scored.
Teresa Karoff continues to lead the conference with four assists, while her two goals gives her eight points in 2022. After five starts in net, van der Vegt has made 25 saves and holds a Goals Against Average of 1.25 for the Pride.
Picked to finish fourth in the NEC Preseason Coaches' Poll, LIU is currently 2-4 on the year following a 5-1 loss to Temple and a 3-2 victory over Quinnipiac. Jules Kuzmich leads the Sharks with three goals on the year, while 2021 All-NEC Second Team honoree Felicia King has two goals and two assists for six points.
The 10th-ranked team in the country in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll, Syracuse is coming off a 5-1 loss to #17 Princeton and a 3-0 win over #25 Monmouth, putting them at 5-1 overall. Leading the way for the Orange this season are 2021 NFHCA All-Americans Quirine Comens (Second Team) with seven goals and three assists, and Charlotte de Vries (Third Team) with six goals and three assists. Syracuse will take on conference-rival Duke on Friday before it hosts the Pride on Sunday.
Hofstra is 4-0 all-time against LIU since the Sharks moved to Division I. Against Syracuse, the Pride is 3-16 all-time. Sunday's contest will be the first meeting between Hofstra and the Orange since 2016, a 5-1 win for Syracuse.
Following the game against Syracuse, the Pride will return to Hempstead for the first of three consecutive home contests, hosting Sacred Heart on September 23 at 3 p.m.
