Charles Small was the highest-placing Hofstra wrestler, as the senior took fourth at 184Â pounds, and the Pride wrestling team finished 17th at the Clarion Open from Tippin Gym Sunday afternoon.
An NCAA qualifier last season after placing third at the EIWA Championships, Small went 2-2 in the bracket with a 10-2 major decision win over Bucknell's Logan Deacetis and a 4-0 decision over unattached Jack Wilt. His defeats came via medical forfeit in the semifinal and third-place matches.
A number of Hofstra grapplers reached the later rounds in their consolation brackets. Junior
Trey Rogers went 4-3 at 197 pounds and advanced to the consolation semifinal stage. He picked up a win by fall over Christian Sequete in the main bracket, and earned wins by decision, major decision, and fall in the consolation bracket. Redshirt senior
Zachary Knighton-Ward picked up two wins by fall in the 285-pound bracket. Sophomore
Michael Leandrou picked up wins by decision and major decision, and advanced to the consolation quarterfinal at 149 pounds, while freshman
Joe McGinty saw his arm raised in victory by fall and decision at 157 pounds. Redshirt senior
Ricky Stamm went 2-2 in the 165 pound bracket, with both wins coming via decision.

Jacob Moon and
Dylan Acevedo-Switzer both made their collegiate debuts at 125 pounds, with Acevedo-Switzer going 0-2 and Moon going 0-1. Also wrestling for Hofstra today was redshirt sophomore

The team finished with 48.5 points as a team, placing them 17th overall and 10th among attached teams. Navy topped the field with 161.5 points. West Virginia (153.5), Pittsburgh (148.5), hosts Clarion (126), and Maryland (117) rounded out the top five of the Clarion Open.
Hofstra returns to action on Sunday, November 14, when the Pride travels to Manheim, Pennsylvania for the Journeyman Northeast Classic.
